The Zavala County Sentinel is a weekly local newspaper circulated throughout Zavala County, Texas and part of Uvalde County, Texas. The Crystal City-based newspaper was founded by J. H. Hardy in La Pryor, Texas, and began operations in May 1913. The newspaper circulates through Crystal City, Uvalde, Batesville, and La Pryor. [2]

Origin

John Hatcher Hardy established the newspaper in La Pryor, Texas in May 1913. In July 1926, the paper moved to Crystal City, Texas. In 1954, the newspaper was purchased by Dale Barker. In 2000, the paper was purchased by Amelia and Tomas Aguilar from the Barker family. In 2010, the newspaper was owned by Rick Sanchez and Jerry Mata until 2018. The paper is currently under the ownership of Annie Lee Amescua, Nelly Fernandez and Juan Fernandez. [2]

Crystal City is a city in and the county seat of Zavala County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,354 at the 2020 census. It was settled as a farming and ranching community and was a major railroad stop being 110 miles (180 km) from San Antonio. Spinach became a major crop and the city has promoted itself as "Spinach Capital of the World." During World War II, a large internment camp was located here. The town is also noteworthy in the history of Mexican American political self-determination for the founding of the La Raza Unida Party.

Tracy Ogden King Tracy Ogden King is an American businessman from Uvalde, Texas, who has been since 1995 a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives from District 80. Beginning in January 2023, the revised District 80 includes these counties south of San Antonio: Dimmit, Frio, Uvalde, Atascosa, Zavala plus the rural portions of Webb County outside Laredo. He is the only Anglo Democrat from a heavily rural district. The Cooper Review is an American weekly newspaper published in Cooper, Texas. It was founded around 1880 by the Hornebeck family as The Cooper Banner; however, through mergers, its history dates to 1873, when The Delta Courier was established. As one of the original businesses in its county that still operates, the paper currently serves the city of Cooper, as well as most of Delta County, and the surrounding areas. The newspaper is owned and published by the Butler family of Cooper, and edited by Janis Thomas. Since 2011, it has been a member of the Texas Press Association.
