Zoey Van Goey were an indie pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, made up of Matt Brennan, Michael John McCarthy, Kim Moore and Adam Scott. Brennan, McCarthy and Moore, hailing from Canada, Ireland and England respectively, formed the initial trio in Glasgow in 2006, with Scott becoming a full-fledged member in 2010. The band stopped performing in 2012. [1]

The band's debut single, "Foxtrot Vandals," was produced by the Belle and Sebastian frontman Stuart Murdoch, and released on seven-inch vinyl in 2007. They released another single, "Sweethearts in Disguise," on seven-inch vinyl in 2008 which was produced by Paul Savage of The Delgados.

Their debut album, The Cage Was Unlocked All Along, also produced by Savage, was first self-released in 2009 and then re-released by Chemikal Underground Records. Their second album, Propeller Versus Wings, was released in 2011.

Press coverage

Zoey Van Goey were received onto the Scottish music scene being described as "like the Postal Service with a sense of humour," [2] being included in national press alongside established acts such as The Chemical Brothers. [3]

Tours and gigs

In 2007, Glasgow-based writer Alan Bissett approached the band and Y'all is Fantasy Island suggesting they perform together. In May 2007, all three performed together in a short tour of Central Scotland. The three acts, dubbed as The Super Puny Humans also performed as a collective during the concerts. [4]

In 2008, Zoey Van Goey played the unsigned stages of Scotland's biggest music festivals, including T in the Park, Connect Music Festival, Wickerman Festival, Live at Loch Lomond and Rock Ness. [5]

In December 2010, Zoey Van Goey played at Bowlie 2, the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival curated by Belle and Sebastian. In 2011, Zoey Van Goey launched their new album Propeller Versus Wings and supported Belle & Sebastian on their European tour. [1]

Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in 1994. Led by Stuart Murdoch, the band has released nine albums. Much of their work had been released on Jeepster Records, but they are now signed to Matador Records worldwide.

The Vaselines

The Vaselines are a Scottish alternative rock band. Formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1986, the band was originally a duo between its songwriters Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, but later added James Seenan and Eugene's brother Charlie Kelly on bass and drums respectively from the band Secession. McKee had formerly been a member of a band named The Pretty Flowers with Duglas T. Stewart, Norman Blake, Janice McBride and Sean Dickson. Eugene Kelly had formerly played in The Famous Monsters.

The Bowlie Weekender was a music festival curated by Belle & Sebastian at the Pontin's Holiday camp in Camber Sands, Sussex between Friday 23 and Sunday 25 April 1999.

Isobel Campbell

Isobel Campbell is a Scottish singer-songwriter, cellist and composer. Campbell rose to prominence at age nineteen as a member of the Scottish indie pop band Belle & Sebastian, but left the group to pursue a solo career, first as The Gentle Waves, and later under her own name. She later collaborated with singer Mark Lanegan on three albums. Her latest studio album 'There Is No Other' was released via Cooking Vinyl on February 7th 2020.

Alan Bissett

Alan Bissett is an author and playwright from Hallglen, an area of Falkirk in Scotland. After the publication of his first two novels, Boyracers and The Incredible Adam Spark, he became known for his different take on Scots dialect writing, evolving a style specific to Falkirk, suffused with popular culture references and socialist politics. He also applied to be rector of Glasgow University in 2014.

Loose Fur is an American rock band comprising Wilco members Jeff Tweedy and Glenn Kotche, and Wilco collaborator Jim O'Rourke. The trio first convened in May 2000 in preparation for a Tweedy performance at a festival in Chicago. Tweedy was offered the opportunity to collaborate with an artist of his choosing, and he decided to work with O'Rourke. O'Rourke brought Kotche to a rehearsal session, and the trio recorded an album's worth of songs. The trio have since released two albums, 2003's Loose Fur and 2006's Born Again in the USA, for Drag City. The band has only toured once.

Paul Savage is a Scottish musician and record producer, best known for being the drummer in the Scottish indie rock group The Delgados.

Stuart David

Stuart David is a Scottish musician, songwriter and novelist, famed for originating two distinct musical genres- Folk Hop, and Horror Pop He co-founded the band Belle and Sebastian and was a member from 1996–2000, and then went on to front Looper (1998–present). He has published four novels- Nalda Said, The Peacock Manifesto, Peacock's Tale and Jackdaw & the Randoms - along with one volume of memoir, In The All-Night Cafe, chronicling the formation of Belle and Sebastian.

Y'all Is Fantasy Island are a Scottish alternative folk band from Falkirk, formed in 2001.

God Help the Girl is a 2009 album by Stuart Murdoch of the band Belle and Sebastian with female vocalists such as Catherine Ireton. God Help the Girl is also the name of the band and the accompanying film released in 2014. The songs are about a Scottish girl who is hospitalized after a nervous breakdown. Two songs were taken from the repertory of Belle and Sebastian.

Adam Stafford

Adam Stafford is a Scottish musician, filmmaker, film writer, photographer and broadcaster based in Falkirk, Scotland. He was the lead singer and songwriter with the Scottish band Y'all is Fantasy Island as well as a short film maker and solo artist. Stafford was born in Sunderland, England. In the late 1980s, his family moved to Falkirk, where he still resides.

Admiral Fallow

Admiral Fallow are a Scottish musical group formed in 2007 by singer-songwriter Louis Abbott and based in Glasgow. They were originally named Brother Louis Collective. The band's first album, Boots Met My Face, was released worldwide in 2011. Their song "Squealing Pigs" was used on NBC's Chuck and was performed live on the BBC's Hogmanay Live 2011.

Retina is a ten-track album by Scottish orchestral rock band How to Swim. Produced by Gavin Thomson and the band's own Ink Wilson, the record was released on 4 October 2010 through Personal Hygiene Records.

<i>Death of a Ladies Man</i> (novel)

Death of a Ladies' Man is the third novel by Scottish writer Alan Bissett, released on 23 July 2009. Set within the city of Glasgow, the novel follows divorcee teacher Charlie Bain's journey into hedonism and sex addiction. Bissett describes Death of a Ladies' Man as "a cautionary tale for women written by a man who is trying to say: 'Look, this is why we are the way we are. Understand but do not forgive."

Miaoux Miaoux

Julian Victor Corrie, better known by his stage name Miaoux Miaoux, is an English producer, musician and songwriter based in Glasgow, Scotland. He is signed to Chemikal Underground Records, who have released his albums Light of the North and School of Velocity. Prior to his solo career Corrie was a member of the Glasgow-based band Maple Leaves.

Matt Brennan is an author, musician, and academic. His published work focuses on popular music and society. He is currently Reader in Popular Music at the University of Glasgow.
