Bonnie T. Fleming is an experimental particle physicist who has held leadership roles in several physics experiments and at Fermilab. Since 2022, she has been Fermilab's chief research officer and deputy director for science and technology. She has also served on the faculty of Yale University and the University of Chicago. Fleming is an expert in neutrino physics and liquid argon time projection chamber detector technology.

Education

Fleming received her bachelor's degree in physics from Barnard College in 1993. After working at Brookhaven National Laboratory as a particle beam operator from 1993 until 1996, she attended Columbia University. [1] [2] While she was a graduate student, she worked on Fermilab's NuTeV experiment. [3] She received her PhD in physics from Columbia University in 2002. [2]

Career

After completing her PhD, Fleming held a postdoctoral position as a Lederman Fellow working on the MiniBooNE neutrino oscillation experiment at Fermilab from 2002 to 2004. [3] [4] [2] In 2004, she joined the faculty of Yale University's department of physics, [2] and she was the second woman to gain tenure in that department. [5]

Fleming continued to work on experiments at Fermilab during her time at Yale. She was a member of the LArIAT (Liquid Argon TPC In A Test beam) collaboration; [2] co-spokesperson on the FINeSSE neutrino scattering experiment; [6] founding spokesperson for the ArgoNeuT Argon Neutrino Test project, which she started in 2006 with support from a National Science Foundation CAREER grant; [1] and founding spokesperson for the MicroBooNE neutrino experiment. [7] Under Fleming's leadership as co-spokesperson, MicroBooNE investigated the excess of electron neutrinos that had been observed by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector at Los Alamos National Laboratory and by the MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab, an anomaly which hinted at the possibility of the existence of a fourth type of neutrino. MicroBooNE announced in 2021 that it did not find evidence of these hypothesized sterile neutrinos. [8] [9] Fleming also collaborates on Fermilab's Short-Baseline Near Detector, and DUNE, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. Fleming played a key role in developing the liquid argon time projection chambers used as detectors for many of these experiments. [7] She helped establish Fermilab's Neutrino Physics Center, and from 2016 to 2018 she served as the lab's deputy chief research officer. [3]

Fleming has also served on high-profile particle physics community panels, including the 2014 Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) convened by the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP). [10]

In addition to her research and leadership roles, Fleming has also been active in science education and outreach and in supporting women scientists. In 2007, she founded Girls’ Science Investigations, a program that encourages middle school girls in New Haven, Connecticut to cultivate their interest, confidence, and skills in science. [11] [12] In 2012, Fleming and her colleague Sarah Demers won a Yale University Seton Elm-Ivy Award for their work with Girls’ Science Investigations. [13] Under Fleming's guidance, Yale students organized a Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics at Yale. [5] Fleming also frequently does public outreach work related to her research, and she has been quoted or featured in publications such as The New York Times [5] and The New Yorker, [14] television programs such as Wired Science [15] and community television, [16] and radio programs such as Here and Now. [17]

In September 2022, Fleming was named Fermilab's chief research officer and deputy director for science and technology. At the same time, she was also appointed professor in the department of physics and the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago. [12] [3]

Antonio Ereditato is an Italian physicist, currently Research Professor at the University of Chicago, associate researcher at Fermilab, Batavia, USA, and Emeritus professor at the University of Bern, Switzerland, where he has been Director of the Laboratory for High Energy Physics from 2006 to 2020. From 2021 to 2022 Ereditato has been Visiting Professor at the Yale University, USA. He carried out research activities in the field of experimental neutrino physics, of weak interactions and strong interactions with experiments conducted at CERN, in Japan, at Fermilab in United States and at the LNGS in Italy. Ereditato has accomplished several R&D studies on particle detectors: wire chambers, calorimeters, time projection chambers, nuclear emulsions, detectors for medical applications.

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a neutrino experiment under construction, with a near detector at Fermilab and a far detector at the Sanford Underground Research Facility that will observe neutrinos produced at Fermilab. An intense beam of trillions of neutrinos from the production facility at Fermilab will be sent over a distance of 1,300 kilometers (810 mi) with the goal of understanding the role of neutrinos in the universe. More than 1,000 collaborators work on the project. The experiment is designed for a 20-year period of data collection.

ICARUS is a physics experiment aimed at studying neutrinos. It was located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) where it started operations in 2010. After completion of its operations there, it was refurbished at CERN for re-use at Fermilab, in the same neutrino beam as the MiniBooNE, MicroBooNE and Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) experiments. The ICARUS detector was then taken apart for transport and reassembled at Fermilab, where data collection is expected to begin in fall 2021.

The Department of Physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology has over 30 faculty members. It offers undergraduate academic programs including B.S. in physics, applied physics, and physics education and graduate programs in physics and health physics. Many notable physicists have both taught and studied at IIT including Nobel Prize for Physics laureates Leon M. Lederman and Jack Steinberger.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mu2e</span> Particle physics experiment

Mu2e, or the Muon-to-Electron Conversion Experiment, is a particle physics experiment at Fermilab in the US. The goal of the experiment is to identify physics beyond the Standard Model, namely, the conversion of muons to electrons without the emission of neutrinos, which occurs in a number of theoretical models. Former project co-spokesperson Jim Miller likens this process to neutrino oscillation, but for charged leptons. The rate for this process in the Standard Model of particle physics is unobservably small, so any observation of this process would constitute a major discovery and indicate new physics beyond the standard model. The experiment will be 10,000 times more sensitive than previous muon to electron conversion experiments, and probe effective energy scales up to 10,000 TeV.

MicroBooNE is a liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois. It is located in the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) beamline where neutrinos are produced by colliding protons from Fermilab's booster-accelerator on a beryllium target; this produces many short-lived particles that decay into neutrinos. The neutrinos pass through solid ground, through another experiment called ANNIE, then solid ground, then through the Short Baseline Near Detector, then ground again before it arrives at the MicroBooNE detector 470 meters downrange from the target. After MicroBooNE the neutrinos continue to the MiniBooNE detector and to the ICARUS detector. MicroBooNE is also exposed to the neutrino beam from the Main Injector (NuMI) which enter the detector at a different angle.

Mayly Sánchez is a Venezuelan-born particle physicist who researches at Iowa State University. In 2011, she was awarded the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor given by the United States to scientists who are in the early stages of their research careers, for her contributions to the study of neutrinos and her work in promoting STEM fields to women. In 2013, she was named by the BBC as one of the top ten women scientists in Latin America.

The Argon Neutrino Teststand (ArgoNeuT) detector, is a liquid argon neutrino detector at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab). The results of the experiment may aid in understanding the nature of neutrinos. This experiment is the precursor to the MicroBooNE experiment. Researchers finished collecting data from ArgoNeuT in March 2010, however analysis is still underway.

Her research considers the development of novel detectors as part of the search for dark matter. Geralyn P. (Sam) Zeller is an American neutrino physicist at Fermilab. At Fermilab, she is a participant in the MiniBooNE experiment, co-spokesperson for the MicroBooNE experiment, and deputy head of the Neutrino Division.

Regina Abby Rameika is an American experimental neutrino physicist known for her work with the DONUT collaboration at Fermilab, which provided the first direct observations of the tau neutrino. She continues to work as a distinguished scientist at Fermilab, where she is co-spokesperson for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE).

Donna Lynne Naples is an American neutrino physicist whose research involves both the use of particle accelerators to generate neutrino beams, and the use of underground neutrino detectors to study cosmic neutrinos and neutrino oscillation. She is a professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh.
