The Dicastery for Communication (Italian : Dicastero per la Comunicazione) is a division (dicastery) of the Roman Curia with authority over all communication offices of the Holy See and the Vatican City State. Its various offices can be accessed through its website. These are the Pope's website and other offices such as Vatican News on internet (including the former Vatican Media Center which distributes segments for television), the Holy See Press Office, L'Osservatore Romano, Photograph Service, Vatican Radio, Vatican Press  [ it ], and the Vatican Publishing House. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications has been subsumed into this new Dicastery.

Pope Francis established the Secretariat for Communication in June 2015, [1] [2] with Monsignor Dario Edoardo Viganò, former director of the Vatican Television Center, as its first prefect. [3] Viganò resigned on 21 March 2018, "a week after his mishandling of a letter from retired Pope Benedict XVI provoked a global outcry". [4]

On 23 June 2018, the secretariat was renamed Dicastery for Communication, [5] and on 5 July 2018, Pope Francis appointed award-winning lay journalist Paolo Ruffini as prefect. He was the first layman named to head a Vatican dicastery. [6] Monsignor Lucio Adrian Ruiz, former head of the Vatican Internet Service, is secretary. Paul Nusiner, former General Manager of Avvenire is director general. [1] [7]

On 12 April 2017, Pope Francis expanded the Secretariat of Communication and appointed 13 new consultants: [9]

On 18 December 2018, Pope Francis appointed Andrea Tornielli as Editorial Director. [10]

On Friday December 3rd 2021, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo as member of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication. [11]

Giovanni Battista Re is an Italian cardinal of the Catholic Church whose service has been primarily in the Roman Curia. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal in 2001. He was prefect of the Congregation for Bishops from 2000 to 2010. As the senior cardinal-bishop in attendance, he chaired the March 2013 papal conclave to elect Pope Benedict XVI's successor. Pope Francis approved his election as Dean of the College of Cardinals on 18 January 2020.

The Secretariat of State is the oldest dicastery in the Roman Curia, the central papal governing bureaucracy of the Catholic Church. It is headed by the Cardinal Secretary of State and performs all the political and diplomatic functions of the Holy See. The Secretariat is divided into three sections: the Section for General Affairs, the Section for Relations with States, and, since 2017, the Section for Diplomatic Staff.

The Dicastery for Bishops, formerly named Congregation for Bishops, is the department of the Roman Curia that oversees the selection of most new bishops. Its proposals require papal approval to take effect, but are usually followed. The Dicastery also schedules the visits at five-year intervals that bishops are required to make to Rome, when they meet with the pope and various departments of the Curia. It also manages the formation of new dioceses. It is one of the more influential Dicasteries, since it strongly influences the human resources policy of the church.

The Pontifical Commission for Latin America is a department of the Roman Curia that since 1958 has been charged with providing assistance to and examining matters pertaining to the Catholic Church in Latin America. Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo is the Catholic Bishop of Oyo diocese. He was born on 13 of July 1961. He was ordained a priest by the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Julius Babatunde Adelakun on 4 January 1986. He was appointed the Catholic Bishop of Oyo by Pope Benedict XVI after the retirement of Julius Babatunde Adelakun on 14 August 2007.

Cristiane Murray is a Brazilian radio journalist who serves as the Vice Director of the Holy See Press Office. She worked for Vatican Radio, within the Dicastery for Communication, providing commentary on papal events and international trips as well as managing and producing content in Portuguese for Vatican News' social media platforms. She was appointed by Pope Francis as Vice Director of the Holy See Press Office in 2019, becoming the second woman, after Paloma García Ovejero, and the first Latin American woman to serve in this capacity. The appointment has made her one of the most prominent women in Vatican leadership.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lazarus You Heung-sik</span> South Korean Catholic cardinal

Lazarus You Heung-sik is a South Korean prelate of the Catholic Church who has served as Prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy since 2021. He is the first Korean to head a department of the Roman Curia. He previously served as Bishop of Daejeon from 2005 to 2021, after two years as a coadjutor bishop under Bishop Joseph Kyeong Kap-ryong. You was created a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2022.

The Dicastery for the Service of Charity, also known as the Apostolic Alms Office, is an administrative unit of the Roman Curia. It began operations on 5 June 2022 as established by the apostolic constitution Praedicate evangelium promulgated on 19 March 2022. Before the reform of Praedicate evangelium it was named the Office of Papal Charities.

It began operations on 5 June 2022 as established by the apostolic constitution Praedicate evangelium promulgated on 19 March 2022. It was formed through the merger of two earlier bodies, the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Congregation for Catholic Education.
