The Communist Party of India (CPI) is the oldest communist party in India. The CPI was founded in modern-day Kanpur on 26 December 1925. Currently it has 2 members in Lok Sabha and 2 members in Rajya Sabha. In addition,it has 22 MLAs across 4 states and 1 MLC in Bihar. It has the current ECI status of a state party in Tamil Nadu,Kerala and Manipur. CPI was the main opposition party in India during 1950's to 1960's.

Mohammed Salim is an Indian politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was inducted in the politburo of CPI(M) in the 21st party congress organised at Visakhapatnam in 2015. He was a member of the 16th Lok Sabha,representing Raiganj constituency. Earlier,he was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha,representing the Calcutta North East constituency of West Bengal. After delimitation,in the 2009 Lok Sabha election Salim contested the new Calcutta North constituency,and lost to Sudip Bandyopadhyay of the Trinamool Congress.

Lal Behari Das was an Indian politician and former member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. He served as the representative of the Khejuri constituency between 1956 and 1957 as a member of the Praja Socialist Party. He was elected to the constituency in a by-election and his candidacy was supported by the Communist Party of India which campaigned in opposition to the proposed merger of West Bengal and Bihar. The Khejuri constituency was abolished for the 1957 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election while Das contested and lost on the seat of Bhagawanpur.
