Ranchi Junction railway station, station code RNC, is the A category railway station serving the capital city of Ranchi in the Ranchi district in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Ranchi station is also the headquarters of the Ranchi division of the South Eastern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. The Ranchi Junction railway station is connected to most of the major cities in India by the railway network.

Ranchi has trains running to Delhi, Kolkata, Dhanbad, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Kamakhya, Deoghar, Bhagalpur, Jammu, Surat, Eranakulam and Patna. The city is a major railway hub and has four major stations: Ranchi Junction, Hatia, Tatisilwai and Namkon. It is one of the top hundred booking stations.

The total number of trains that pass through Ranchi (RNC) junction is 120.

History

In November 1907, Ranchi was brought onto India's railway map with the Purulia–Ranchi narrow-gauge line. In 1911, it was extended up to Lohardaga.

In 2003, the Ranchi division was carved out from the existing Adra railway division of the South Eastern Railway zone. [1] As of 2012 Ranchi station is being renovated and developed in the lines of Jaipur railway station. [2] The facade of the Ranchi station has been improved in February 2012. [3] In Feb 2012 two new platforms were added to the Ranchi station along with mechanical interlocking system. [4]

There are six platforms in Ranchi Junction. [1] The platforms are interconnected with two foot overbridges (FOB) and an escalator.

Connections

Ranchi Junction is located close to the bus terminal and domestic airport providing transport to important destinations of Jharkhand. Automatic ticket vending machines have been installed to reduce the queue for train tickets on the station. The railway medical unit provides health facilities is located near Muri Junction. Ranchi–New Giridih Intercity Express, the only train running with a Vistadome coach in the state of Jharkhand, terminates at Ranchi. [5] [6] The nearest airports to Ranchi Junction are:

Grand Chord is part of the Howrah–Gaya–Delhi line and Howrah–Prayagraj–Mumbai line. It acts as a link between Sitarampur, (Asansol), and Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction,, previously known as Mughalsarai Junction, and covers a stretch of 450.7 km (280.1 mi). The Coal India Corridor line that branches off from Dhanbad Junction and rejoins the Grand Chord at Son Nagar Junction is another major coal loading hub. It is a fully electrified, quadruple line section from Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay to Son Nagar and double line section from Son Nagar to Sitarampur. There are plans to triple the lines from Son Nagar to Dhanbad to accommodate the increasing traffic.. The entire line lies under the jurisdiction of three divisions, Mughalsarai railway division, Dhanbad railway division and Asansol railway division. The Grand chord section is the lifeline of the country, 2nd busiest railway section of India after Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh to Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction, Uttar Pradesh Main Line section, on which coal, steel and other important goods are moved from Eastern section to Western and Northern sections of the country. In the down direction, the traffic consists of mostly food grains, fertilizers and empty wagons for coal loading in the Jharkhand and West Bengal coal fields. Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction is a transit division and the main objective is to maintain mobility of high density traffic. The present capacity of the Grand Chord is being optimally utilized. Traversing through Chota Nagpur Plateau of Jharkhand as well as parts of the fertile Gangetic plains of Bihar, the Grand Chord covers a stretch of 450.7 km (280.1 mi). The Grand Chord is renowned for its remarkable controlling of passenger traffic, despite being burdened with freight traffic.

Kiul Junction railway station, is one of the major railway junctions in Danapur division of East Central Railway. Kiul is connected to metropolitan areas of India, by the Howrah–Delhi main line via Mugalsarai–Patna route which runs along the historic Grand Trunk Road. The Danapur railway division's main line crosses Sahibganj loop line at the Kiul Junction. The main line crosses the Kiul River between Kiul Junction and Lakhisarai Junction. The line connects the cultural capital of Jharkhand Deoghar to the subcapital of Jharkhand, Dumka. The Jasidih–Dumka section falls under Asansol Division of Eastern Railway and Dumka–Rampurhat section under Howrah Division of Eastern Railway.

The Koderma–Maheshmunda section falls under Dhanbad Division of East Central Railway and Giridih–Madhupur section under Asansol Division of Eastern Railway. The construction of 110 km (68 mi) rail line from Koderma to Maheshmunda was done under supervision of Dhanbad Division of East Central Railway.
