Simi Linton is an American arts consultant, author, filmmaker, and activist. Her work focuses on Disability Arts, disability studies, and ways that disability rights and disability justice perspectives can be brought to bear on the arts. [1]

Career

Linton was on the faculty at Hunter College of the City University of New York from 1985 to 1998, was co-director of the University Seminar in Disability Studies at Columbia University from 2003 to 2007, and was the Hofstra University Presidential Visiting Scholar in 2006. [2] She received the Barnard College Medal of Distinction in 2015, [3] [4] and an honorary Doctor of Arts from Middlebury College in 2016. [5]

In 1998, she founded Disability/Arts Consultancy. [6] Since then, Linton has worked with organizations such as United States Artists, Whitney Museum of American Art, [7] Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts, [8] Gibney Dance, [9] The Public Theatre, Dance/NYC, [10] [11] the Margaret Mead Film Festival, and other cultural, activist and academic institutions.

In 2014, Linton and Christian von Tippelskirch produced and directed the documentary film Invitation to Dance. [12] The film was based, in part, on Linton's memoir My Body Politic and her long history of activism. The film premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2014, [13] where it was nominated for a Social Justice Award by the Fund for Santa Barbara.

Linton was appointed to the New York City Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission (2015) [14] and the She Built NYC Committee (2018) [15] by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Disability art or disability arts is any art, theatre, fine arts, film, writing, music or club that takes disability as its theme or whose context relates to disability.

Gibney Dance, founded in 1991 by choreographer Gina Gibney, is a multi-faceted dance organization occupying two locations in New York City: one at 890 Broadway in the Flatiron District and the other at 280 Broadway in Tribeca. The organization’s activities are divided into the following three interrelated fields: Center, Company, and Community. The first, Center, refers to the facility and its programming, which provide rehearsal space to nonprofit and commercial renters in addition to classes, programs, and services to the New York dance community. Company refers to Gibney Dance Company, a professional contemporary dance company operating out of the Center. Finally, Community refers to Community Action, an outreach program uniting dancers with survivors of domestic violence in shelters around New York City. In 2008, Gibney Dance was inducted into Vanity Fair’s Hall of Fame for “making art and taking action”.

Alice Sheppard is a disabled choreographer and dancer from Britain. Sheppard started her career first as a professor, teaching English and Comparative Literature. After attending a conference on disability studies, she saw Homer Avila performed and was inspired. She became a member of the AXIS Dance Company and toured with them. She also founded her own dance company, Kinetic Light, which is an artistic coalition created in collaboration with other disabled dancers Laurel Lawson, Jerron Herman and Michael Maag, who also does lighting and is a video artist. A lot of Alice's work revolves intersectionality.

Carolyn Lieba Francois Lazard is an American artist based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Lazard uses the experience of chronic illness to examine concepts of intimacy and the labor of living involved with chronic illnesses. Lazard expresses their ideas through a variety of mediums including performance, filmmaking, sculpture, writing, photography, sound; as well as environments and installations. Lazard is a 2019 Pew Foundation Fellow and one of the first recipients of The Ford Foundation's 2020 Disability Futures Fellows Awards.

Vincent Sapienza is an American civil servant who is serving as the Chief Operating Officer of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. From 2017 to 2022, he was the agency's Commissioner.

Emma Wolfe is an American government official and advisor who served as Deputy Mayor of New York City for Administration and Chief of Staff to New York City mayor Bill de Blasio.
