Cable television in the Philippines was introduced in 1969 with the first commercial service of Nuvue Cablevision (later absorbed into Sky Cable); Satellite television in the Philippines was introduced in 2001 with the first commercial broadcast of Dream Satellite TV (now defunct); and IPTV and digital over-the-top streaming services in the Philippines was introduced in 2010 with the first commercial broadcast of iWant TV (now iWant TFC), before the arrival of international-based streaming services such as iflix and Netflix.
There are two non-profit organizations that represent the cable television industry, namely: the Federation of International Cable TV and Telecommunications Association of the Philippines (FICTAP), and the Philippine Cable and Telecommunications Association (PCTA).
Sky Cable, Destiny Cable, and Cablelink are currently the primary cable operators in the country. [1] There are also local regional companies, such as Air Cable in Pampanga and Rizal, Asian Vision in Zambales, Batangas and Quezon, Royal Cable in Laguna, Planet Cable in Cavite, Fil-Products TV in Visayas, and Parasat Cable TV in Northern Mindanao. Internet Protocol television (IPTV) is the delivery of television content over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. This is in contrast to delivery through traditional terrestrial, satellite, and cable television formats. Unlike downloaded media, IPTV offers the ability to stream the source media continuously. As a result, a client media player can begin playing the content almost immediately. This is known as streaming media.
The Filipino Channel, commonly known as TFC, is a global subscription television network owned and operated by the Philippine media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation. Its programming is composed primarily of imported programs produced and distributed by ABS-CBN Entertainment and ABS-CBN News, targeting the Filipino diaspora. Available globally on various television platforms, TFC launched on September 24, 1994, and was the world's first trans-Pacific Asian broadcaster.
Palawan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC) is a Philippine media network. Its corporate office is located in Puerto Princesa.
Kapamilya Channel is a 24-hour Philippine pay television network operated by ABS-CBN Corporation, a company under Lopez Holdings Corporation owned by the López family. The network is headquartered at ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Quezon City. A separate high definition 1080i resolution channel began broadcasting the same day.
Digital terrestrial television in the Philippines began in 2015 with the implementation of ISDB-T, currently coexisting with analog television that operates on the NTSC standard after the set analog switch-off (ASO) deadline encountered multiple postponements.
Knowledge Channel is a Philippine free-to-air television channel owned by ABS-CBN that consists of educational and informative programs. The channel is available on digital TV via BEAM TV, Sky Cable, Sky Direct, Cignal, Parasat Cable TV, G Sat, Cablelink and other cable providers. It also livestreams online via iWantTFC while a video on demand service is available on YouTube.
Cignal is a Philippine satellite television and IPTV provider, owned by Cignal TV Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the MediaQuest Holdings Inc. under the PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund.
Aksyon TV was a Philippine free-to-air television network. It was a joint venture of Nation Broadcasting Corporation and TV5 Network, Inc., both under PLDT media arm MediaQuest Holdings. Its programs were primarily produced by TV5's divisions News5 and ESPN5. AksyonTV formerly broadcasts terrestrially through DWNB-TV in Metro Manila, as well as on UHF channel 29 in Cebu, Davao and other relay stations, and on a digital subchannel via channel 5.2 in Metro Manila. It occupies the frequency previously used by MTV Philippines, a subsidiary of MTV Networks Asia Pacific from 2001 until 2006.
NBA Premium TV was a Philippine pay television sports-oriented network owned by Solar Entertainment Corporation. The channel is a joint venture between Solar and NBA TV. It was a live simulcast broadcast of NBA TV, the league's dedicated channel in the United States.
Sky Cable Corporation, doing business as Sky, is a Filipino telecommunications company based in Diliman, Quezon City. A subsidiary of the media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation, the company offers broadband, cable and satellite television services under the Sky Cable and Sky Direct brands. The company was founded on June 6, 1990 by Benpres Holdings Corporation as Central CATV, Inc.
Jeepney TV is a Philippine pay television channel owned and operated by Creative Programs, a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation. Consisting of classic television programs produced by ABS-CBN, the channel is named after a jeepney, an automotive vehicle widely used as a public transportation in the Philippines. A video on demand service for the channel's programs are available worldwide via iWantTFC and TFC IPTV.
Jack City was a Filipino cable and satellite television network based in Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong. Formerly known as Chase, it serves as the spin-off channel to Jack TV. Owned by Solar Entertainment Corporation, the channel is currently broadcast on Cignal Digital TV channel 22, Destiny Cable channel 64 (analog) & channel 138 (digital), Cablelink channel 40, and SkyCable channel 138 (digital) and other cable operators in the Philippines, and is also available on live streaming via video-on-demand service Blink. It was also previously aired on BEAM TV from 2012 to 2014.
iWantTFC is a Filipino over-the-top content platform and production company owned and operated by ABS-CBN Digital Media, a division of ABS-CBN Corporation, formed in 2020 through the merger of two streaming services iWant and TFC Online. In addition to offering on-demand contents of ABS-CBN, iWantTFC also live streams linear channels such as Kapamilya Channel, DWPM/TeleRadyo Serbisyo, Knowledge Channel, FashionTV, A8 ESports, and Black Belt.
Sky Direct was a direct-broadcast satellite subscription television service in the Philippines owned and operated by Sky, a subsidiary of ABS-CBN Corporation. Sky Cable had been eyeing for a DBS service and considered on acquiring Dream Satellite TV from Antonio O. Cojuangco, Jr. The acquisition of Dream was reported to have reached an advanced stage but for some undisclosed reasons, the deal was not sealed. Sky's entry to the DBS market was hindered by various oppositions from the industry, citing legal issues and the slow growth of the pay TV market in the country. On December 23, 2015, Sky was granted by the NTC a provisional authority to operate and maintain a DBS service in 251 cities and municipalities in the country for a period of 18 months. Sky Direct offered both prepaid and postpaid packages with exclusive channels from ABS-CBN and Creative Programs such as ABS-CBN HD, ABS-CBN News Channel, ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD, Cinema One, Jeepney TV, Metro Channel, Liga, and Myx. As of March 2019, Sky Direct had over 1 million subscribers.
ANIPLUS is an Asian multinational television channel and anime distributor based in Singapore and South Korea. Launched on 7 December 2009, the channel is currently available on SK Broadband, LG Uplus IPTV service, and KT SkyLife. The company also has a video on demand platform in its own country. Most of its programming are licensed from its parent company JJ MediaWorks for subtitling and dubbing distribution.
Cignal TV, Inc., also known by its legal trading name Mediascape Inc., is a Filipino media and telecommunications firm in the Philippines. A wholly owned subsidiary of the media company MediaQuest Holdings under the PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund, the firm operates its pay television services, subscription television networks, television and film entertainment production, and fiber broadband internet.
