The governor-general of Australia is the representative of the monarch of Australia,currently King Charles III,and performs many constitutional,ceremonial and community roles in the Australian political system. When performing these roles,the governor-general acts independently and is not the King's delegate or agent. The current governor-general is David Hurley,having been appointed on 1 July 2019. Samantha Mostyn has been chosen by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to be the next governor-general,beginning 1 July 2024.

The opening ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics took place on the evening of Friday,15 September 2000 in Stadium Australia,Sydney,during which the Games were formally opened by then-Governor-General Sir William Deane. As mandated by the Olympic Charter,the proceedings combined the formal and ceremonial opening of this international sporting event,including welcoming speeches,hoisting of the flags and the parade of athletes,with an artistic spectacle to showcase the host nation's culture and history. Veteran ceremonies director Ric Birch was the Director of Ceremonies while David Atkins was the Artistic Director and Producer. Its artistic section highlighted several aspects of Australian culture and history,showing Australia's flora and fauna,technology,multiculturalism,and the hopeful moment of reconciliation towards Aboriginal Australians. The ceremony had a cast of 12,687 performers,seen by a stadium audience of around 110,000.

After leaving politics he served as the inaugural chief justice of the Federal Court of Australia (1976–1990).
General David John Hurley,is an Australian former senior officer in the Australian Army who has served as the 27th governor general of Australia since 2019. He was previously the 38th governor of New South Wales,serving from 2014 to 2019.
Stephen John Gageler is an Australian judge and former barrister. He has been a Justice of the High Court of Australia since 2012 and was appointed Chief Justice of Australia in 2023. He previously served as Solicitor-General of Australia from 2008 to 2012. He is a graduate of the Australian National University and Harvard Law School and was a barrister in private practice before his appointment as solicitor-general.
Sir Henry Edward Manning,KBE QC was an Australian lawyer and politician. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council for 25 years from 1932 to 1958 and also served as the Attorney General and Vice-President of the Executive Council from 1932 to 1941.
