The 2018 Colorado Rapids season was the Colorado Rapids' 23rd season of existence, their 23rd season in Major League Soccer and their 23rd season in the top-tier of American soccer.

Contents

Due to a reconfiguration in the CONCACAF Champions League format, the Rapids behan play in the Champions League after they qualified in the 2016 season. Colorado opened their slate of competitive fixtures on February 20 in the Champions League Round of 16 with a two-legged series against Canadian champions, Toronto FC in the round of 16. On March 3, the club played their regular season opener against the Chicago Fire. The Rapids also played in the U.S. Open Cup.

Background

The 2017 season saw a sharp downturn in the Rapids fortunes. Colorado finished the 2017 season second-bottom of the Western Conference table, with the third-worst overall record in Major League Soccer. Colorado finished 10th in the Western Conference and 20th in the overall table. The team scored a league-low 31 goals in 34 matches and conceded 51 goals. Dominique Badji lead the team with 7 goals across all competitions.

Outside of MLS play, the Rapids played in the 2017 edition of the U.S. Open Cup, where they lost in the fifth round to FC Dallas. The Rapids failed to qualify for the 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs. At the end of the campaign, four-year head coach, Pablo Mastroeni was relieved of his duties.

The team began the season with three scoreless matches and were both the final team that failed to register a goal, and the last that did not allowed one. A loss in their fourth match extended their scoreless streak to four, and their winless streak dating back to last season to 18 matches. Both streaks ended on April 10 against FC Dallas, who the Rapids defeated 4–0.

The 2015 FC Dallas season was the club's 20th season in existence in Major League Soccer, the top tier of the American soccer pyramid. Including the Dallas Tornado soccer franchise of the original NASL, this is the 35th season of professional soccer in Dallas. The 2020 Sporting Kansas City season was the twenty-fifth season of the team's existence in Major League Soccer and the tenth year played under the Sporting Kansas City moniker. The season was suspended on March 12, for 30 days, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following that decision, on March 19 Major League Soccer extended its temporary suspension until May 10. Following that decision, on April 17 Major League Soccer extended its temporary suspension until June 8.

The 2020 Colorado Rapids season was the club's twenty-fifth season of existence and their twenty-fifth consecutive season in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight of American soccer. The club qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season. Colorado were also set compete in the U.S. Open Cup before its cancellation. The season covers the period from October 7, 2019, to the conclusion of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

The 2022 Colorado Rapids season was the club's twenty-seventh season of existence and their twenty-seventh consecutive season in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top flight of American soccer.
