The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a public research university in El Paso, Texas. It is a member of the University of Texas System. UTEP is the second-largest university in the United States to have a majority Mexican American student population after the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. It is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".
The Don Haskins Center, formerly known as the Special Events Center, is the home of UTEP Miners men's and women's basketball. The venue is located in the heart of El Paso, Texas. In addition to hosting sporting events, the Don Haskins Center is also used by many area schools, such as El Paso Community College, for graduation and commencement ceremonies. Due to its large seating capacity, the center is also the city's premier entertainment venue and has hosted big-name acts such as pop star Shakira's Tour of the Mongoose, Oral Fixation Tour and The Sun Comes Out World Tour, Britney Spears during her Circus Tour, comedian George Lopez and rock band KISS.
Gary Nord is a former American football player and coach. Nord was the head football coach as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) from 2000 to 2003, he compiling a record of 14–34. He led the 2000 UTEP Miners football team to a Western Athletic Conference and a berth in the 2000 Humanitarian Bowl, their first bowl game since 1988, where they lost to the 2000 Boise State Broncos football team
Lester Michael Brumbelow was an American football and basketball player and coach. He played football and basketball for Texas Christian University from 1927 to 1929 and was the captain and most valuable player of the TCU Horned Frogs undefeated 1929 football team that won the school's first Southwest Conference championship. He later served as an assistant football coach and head basketball coach at TCU from 1936 to 1941. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the athletics program at the Navy Pre-Flight School, and attained the rank of lieutenant commander. After the war, he served as an assistant football coach at the University of Mississippi from 1946 to 1948. From 1950 to 1956 he was the head football coach at Texas Western College, now the University of Texas at El Paso; he also served as the school's athletic director from 1950 to 1959.
Dana August Dimel is an American football coach and former player. He was most recently the head football coach of the University of Texas at El Paso. Previously he was the co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Kansas State University from 2009–2017. Dimel has also coached at the University of Arizona and served as the head football coach at the University of Wyoming from 1997 to 1999 and at the University of Houston from 2000 to 2002, compiling a career college football record of 47-79.
Brian Young is an American football coach and former player defensive tackle who is a defensive coach for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). Young played college football for the University of Texas at El Paso, and professionally for the St. Louis Rams and New Orleans Saints of the NFL.
The UTEP Miners football program represents University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in the sport of American football. The Miners compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the West Division of Conference USA (CUSA). They are coached by Dana Dimel. UTEP has produced a Border Conference championship team in 1956 and a Western Athletic Conference championship team in 2000, along with 14 postseason bowl appearances. The Miners play their home games at the Sun Bowl which has a seating capacity of 51,500.
Edmund Elisala Stansbury is a former professional American football fullback in the National Football League. Considered a Blue Chip recruit at the quarterback position. He was listed as high as the #3 QB in the Nation according to the Sporting News magazine and the #1 Quarterback in the Big 12 region by PrepStar in 1997. Stansbury took official visits to UCLA, Notre Dame, University of Texas(John Mackovic), Syracuse and UTEP. (He attended UCLA, where he was a two-year starter as the team's fullback blocking for Deshaun Foster. His most notable highlight was scoring the game-winning touchdown against the University of Michigan in 2000 at the Rosebowl. Made the 53 man roster as a priority undrafted free agent Houston Texans in 2002. In 2003, he signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks. In 2004, he was allocated to NFL Europe by the Houston Texans where he was the starting fullback of the World Bowl Championship team Berlin Thunder. Ed Stansbury was inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in the Living Athlete Category in 2015
Brian Natkin is an American college football coach and former tight end. He is the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for Colorado State University Pueblo, a position he has held since 2024. He also coached for Hutchinson Community College, University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Midwestern State University, and University of Northern Colorado.

The Miners were led by third–year head coach Dana Dimel and played their home games at the Sun Bowl. They competed as members of the West Division of Conference USA (C–USA).
Scotty Walden is an American football coach who is currently the head coach at University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). Walden had previously served as the head coach at East Texas Baptist University, Austin Peay State University and interim head coach at the University of Southern Mississippi.
The 1993 UTEP Miners football team was an American football team that represented the University of Texas at El Paso in the Western Athletic Conference during the 1993 NCAA Division I-A football season. After a 1–6 start to the season, fifth year head coach David Lee was fired and replaced with defensive coordinator Charlie Bailey. The Miners then ended the season with five more losses and finished with an 1–11 record.
The 1972 UTEP Miners football team was an American football team that represented the University of Texas at El Paso in the Western Athletic Conference during the 1972 NCAA University Division football season. After a 1–5 start to the season, eighth-year head coach Bobby Dobbs resigned and was replaced with offensive coordinator Tommy Hudspeth. The Miners then ended the season with one win and three more losses and finished with an 2–8 record.
Wes Phillips is an American football coach and former player who is the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). He is the son of former Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, and Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips and the grandson of former Houston Oilers and New Orleans Saints head coach Bum Phillips.
