The Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility is a state prison for men located in Ordway, Crowley County, Colorado, owned and operated by the Colorado Department of Corrections. The facility opened in 1987 and houses a maximum of 1007 inmates at minimum, medium and high security levels. [1]

The Colorado Department of Corrections is the principal department of the Colorado state government that operates the state prisons. It has its headquarters in the Springs Office Park in unincorporated El Paso County, Colorado, near Colorado Springs. The Colorado Department of Corrections runs 20 state-run prisons and also has been affiliated with 7 for-profit prisons in Colorado, of which the state currently contracts with 3 for-profit prisons.
The Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) is a state correctional facility for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services. Located in Lincoln, it is the oldest state correctional facility in Nebraska, opening in 1869. Until after World War I, it was the only adult correctional facility in the state.
Great Meadow Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison in New York State in the United States. The prison is in Comstock, a hamlet right outside of the village of Fort Ann in Washington County, New York. As of September 3, 2008 it was home to 1,663 inmates. When Great Meadow opened in 1911 it was the fourth prison for adult males constructed in the state of New York.

The 2008 Atlanta tornado outbreak was a destructive and deadly tornado outbreak that affected the Southeastern United States on March 14–15, 2008. The most infamous tornado of the outbreak occurred on March 14 when an isolated but strong EF2 tornado caused widespread damage across Downtown Atlanta, Georgia, including to the CNN Center and to the Georgia Dome, which was hosting the 2008 SEC men's basketball tournament. Other buildings that were damaged include the Georgia World Congress Center, Philips Arena during an Atlanta Hawks game, and the Omni Hotel, which was evacuated after many windows were blown out. The Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel suffered major window damage. The image of the building with all its windows blown out became famous and for a time was a symbol of the tornado. Centennial Olympic Park, SunTrust Plaza and historic Oakland Cemetery were also damaged.

Colorado State Penitentiary is a Level V maximum security prison in the U.S. state of Colorado. The facility is part of the state's East Cañon Complex, together with six other state correctional facilities of various security levels.
Centennial Correctional Facility (CCF) is a prison located in the East Canon complex in Fremont County, just east of Cañon City, Colorado. CCF consists of two separate buildings, North and South. The South facility, opened in 2011, is a Level V maximum security facility. All offenders in CCF South are in Administrative Segregation (AdSeg), also known as solitary confinement. CCF South is the counterpart of the Colorado State Penitentiary (CSP), also in the East Canon complex. The North facility is the original facility, and primarily houses Level IV maximum security offenders.
Fremont Correctional Facility (FCF) is a state prison located in the East Canon prison complex in Fremont County, just east of Canon City, Colorado.
Fort Lyon Correctional Facility was a facility in Bent County, Colorado, housing transgender inmates and inmates with medical conditions requiring constant care. Fort Lyon was decommissioned in 2012 and its inmates were transferred to LaVista Correctional Facility.
The Youthful Offender System (YOS) is a medium security prison in Pueblo, Colorado. YOS houses male and female offenders between ages 14–19. Inmates at YOS have all been convicted of a violent felony, except Class 1 felonies, and sentenced as adults through the state's Department of Corrections (DOC) system. They are not sentenced as juveniles or sentenced through the Department of Youth Services system. Offenders can only be sent to YOS if their sentencing judge recommends them for the YOS program. The judge makes this determination based on the offender's age and perceived amenability for rehabilitation. The maximum sentence a YOS inmate can serve is 7 years, no matter what their original charge was, and the minimum sentence a YOS inmate can serve is 2 years. YOS sentencing is in lieu of jail sentences and if the offender fails the YOS program they will have to serve the jail sentence that has been suspended.
La Vista Correctional Facility (LVCF) is a state prison located in Pueblo, Pueblo County, Colorado, owned and operated by the Colorado Department of Corrections. The facility partially opened in April 2006, ramping up to its maximum capacity of 564 inmates.
The Lea County Correctional Facility (LCCF) is a medium-security prison for men located four miles north-west of Hobbs, New Mexico, opened in 1998 on 60 acres of the former Hobbs Army Airfield, now adjacent to the Lea County Regional Airport. The facility can house 1200 state inmates of the New Mexico Corrections Department, and is operated by the private GEO Group under a contract administered through the county.
The Skyline Correctional Center is a Level 1 minimum security prison facility at Cañon City in the state of Colorado. The Prison was opened in 1957 with 60 beds and houses 126 male offenders. Inmates assigned to SCC are within 60 months of their parole eligibility date and in most cases have attended numerous treatment programs offered through the Colorado Department of Corrections.
Jill Lonita Coit is an American convicted murderer. A con artist and serial bigamist who has been married 11 times to nine different men since 1961, Coit was convicted of killing her eighth husband in 1993 and is also suspected of killing her third husband in 1972. Coit is serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility.
The tornado outbreak sequence of May 5–10, 2015 was a six-day outbreak of tornado activity that affected the Great Plains of the United States in early May 2015. On May 6, strong tornadoes impacted the Oklahoma City area, along with rural parts of Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The outbreak coincided with major flooding, with large amounts of rain falling in parts of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The National Weather Service forecast office in Norman, Oklahoma issued a "flash flood emergency" for Oklahoma City following record-breaking rainfall that occurred in the area that evening. The outbreak sequence resulted in five tornado-related deaths, along with two flood-related deaths. A total of 127 tornadoes were confirmed and rated as a result of this outbreak sequence. Damage from the outbreak was estimated at $1.5 billion.
The Crowley County Correctional Facility is a medium-security, privately owned and operated state prison for men located in Olney Springs, Crowley County, Colorado. CoreCivic runs it under contract with the Colorado Department of Corrections.
The Buena Vista Correctional Facility is a state prison for men located in Buena Vista, Chaffee County, Colorado, owned and operated by the Colorado Department of Corrections. The facility opened as an adult prison in 1978, and houses 871 inmates at medium and close security levels, along with the 288-inmate Buena Vista Minimum Center, and another 100 minimum security inmates within the Colorado Correctional Alternative Program. The Boot Camp is closed today. The close security facility is known to inmates as "The Buildings" and the Minimum is known as "The Mods". The prison is split into 6 Housing units A&O which is an Orientation unit that inmates are placed in when they first arrive to the prison. Segregation is the unit where inmates are placed for disciplinary actions, North Unit, Lower North Unit, East Unit and South Unit which houses the majority of the prisons active gang members and violent offenders. In the late 90s and Early 2000s "The Buildings was referred to as "Gladiator School" because most of Colorado's younger gang members were sent there. During that time the fighting and violence was at a record High in the State.
The March 2019 North American blizzard was a powerful Colorado Low that produced up to two feet of snow in the plains and Midwest. Rapid snowmelt following the storm caused historic flooding, and some areas received hurricane-force wind gusts. Comparable to the 1993 Storm of the Century, the storm was labeled a bomb cyclone after barometric pressure readings dropped in excess of 24 mbar (0.71 inHg) over a 24-hour period. After the storm entered Colorado from its origination in Arizona, the pressure dropped more than 30 mbar (0.89 inHg) and rapidly intensified over the western High Plains. The severe storm set new all-time record low barometric pressure readings in Colorado, Kansas and New Mexico. The storm itself killed only one person in Colorado, but flooding caused by the storm killed at least 3, one in Iowa and at least two in Nebraska and left ~140,000 without power in Texas.
Jonelle Matthews was a 12-year-old American girl who disappeared near Greeley, Colorado, on December 20, 1984. Her remains were discovered on July 24, 2019, by construction workers putting in a new pipeline 15 mi (24 km) from her home. Steven Pankey was sentenced to life imprisonment on October 31, 2022, after his arrest and trial for Matthews' murder.
