Frances Ann "Fran" Ulmer is an American administrator and Democratic politician from the U.S. state of Alaska. She served as the seventh lieutenant governor of Alaska from 1994 to 2002 under Governor Tony Knowles,becoming the first woman elected to statewide office in Alaska,and lost the 2002 gubernatorial election against Republican Frank Murkowski. In 2007 she became the Chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA),before serving as Chair of the United States Arctic Research Commission between 2011 and 2020,appointed by President Barack Obama.
The Alaskan Independence Party (AKIP) is an Alaskan nationalist political party in the United States that advocates for an in-state referendum which would include the option of Alaska becoming an independent country. The party also advocates positions similar to those of the Constitution Party,Republican Party and Libertarian Party,supporting gun rights,anti-abortion policies,privatization,homeschooling,and limited government. Wally Hickel was elected as the Governor of Alaska in 1990 under the Independence Party,making it one of the few third parties to have controlled a governor's seat;however,Hickel transferred to the Republican Party before the 1994 election.
Edward Lewis "Bob" Bartlett,was an American politician and a member of the Democratic Party. He served as a U.S. Senator. A key fighter for Alaska statehood,Bartlett served as the Secretary of Alaska Territory from 1939 to 1945,in Congress from 1945 to 1959 as a Delegate,and from 1959 until his death in 1968 as a U.S. senator. He was opposed to U.S. involvement in Vietnam,along with his fellow Senator Ernest Gruening,and also worked to warn people about the dangers of radiation. Many acts bear his name,including a major law known as the Bartlett Act,mandating handicap access in all federally-funded buildings.
Anthony Carroll Knowles is an American politician and businessman who served as the seventh governor of Alaska from 1994 to 2002. Barred from seeking a third consecutive term as governor in 2002,he ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2004 and again for governor in 2006. In September 2008,Knowles became president of the National Energy Policy Institute,a non-profit energy policy organization funded by billionaire George Kaiser's family foundation,and located at the University of Tulsa.
Arthur K. Delaney was an American lawyer,Democratic politician,and pioneer of Wisconsin and Alaska. He was the first mayor Juneau,Alaska,and was appointed United States District Judge for Alaska by President Grover Cleveland. Earlier in his career,he served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and represented Dodge County in the Wisconsin Legislature for three years.
Joseph E. Vogler was the founder of the Alaskan Independence Party. He was also chair or gubernatorial nominee during most of the party's existence. He was also known,originally in his adopted hometown of Fairbanks,Alaska,and later statewide,as a frequent participant in governmental and political affairs and frequent litigant in court. Curiously enough,he was known to many non-political observers for his fashion sense,in particular his ubiquitous wearing of fedoras and bolo ties.

Hardy Myers was an American lawyer and Democratic politician who served three terms as the 15th attorney general of the state of Oregon,United States. Prior to taking office in 1997,he served from 1975 to 1985 in the Oregon House of Representatives,the last four of those years as its speaker,and was also a Metro councilor and chaired the Oregon Criminal Justice Council.
The Alaska political corruption probe refers to a 2003 to 2010 widespread investigation by the Public Integrity Section of the U.S. Department of Justice,the Federal Bureau of Investigation,and the Internal Revenue Service into political corruption of nine then-current or former Alaskan state lawmakers,as well as Republican US Representative Don Young and then-US Senator,Republican Ted Stevens. Sometimes referred to as "The Corrupt Bastards Club" or the "Operation Polar Pen",the investigation focused on the oil industry,fisheries and for-profit prison industries.
Sean Randall Parnell is an American attorney and politician who was the tenth governor of Alaska from 2009 to 2014. He succeeded Sarah Palin in July 2009,and was elected governor in his own right in 2010 with 59.06% of the vote,as the largest percentage margin of any Alaska governor since statehood. In 2014,he narrowly lost his bid for re-election and returned to work in the private sector. He is a member of the Republican Party.
Robert Walter Ward was an American electrician,businessman,and government executive,and Republican politician from the U.S. state of Alaska. He was the third Secretary of State of Alaska from 1969 to 1970,and was the last person to serve under that title,as the title was changed to lieutenant governor by a constitutional amendment passed by voters on August 25,1970,making him the first lieutenant governor of Alaska.
Dennis William Egan was an American politician who was a member of the Alaska Senate representing Juneau from April 19,2009,until January 15,2019. A member of the Democratic Party,he previously served as the mayor of Juneau from February 13,1995,to October 3,2000,and was a member of the local assembly prior to that. Outside of politics,he was known for his work as a radio broadcaster,most notably for KINY,and was inducted to the Alaskan Broadcaster Association's Hall of Fame in 2001.
Byron Ivar Mallott was an American politician,elder,tribal activist,and business executive from the state of Alaska. Mallott was an Alaska Native leader of Tlingit heritage and the leader of the Kwaash KéKwaan clan. He was the 12th lieutenant governor of Alaska from December 2014 until his resignation on October 16,2018. He also previously served as the mayor of Yakutat,the mayor of Juneau,the president of the Alaska Federation of Natives and the executive director of the Alaska Permanent Fund.

The general election was preceded by primary elections which were held on August 24,2010. Scott McAdams,the Mayor of Sitka,became the Democratic nominee;Joe Miller,an attorney and former federal magistrate,became the Republican nominee after defeating incumbent U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski. Miller was endorsed by the Tea Party movement and former Governor Sarah Palin. Murkowski announced that despite her defeat in the primary,she would run in the general election as a write-in candidate.

Treadwell also served as chair of the United States Arctic Research Commission from 2006 to 2010. He is a member of the Republican Party and was a candidate for the 2014 U.S. Senate election in Alaska.
Warren W. Matthews,Jr. is an American lawyer and jurist who was a justice of the Alaska Supreme Court from 1977 to 2009. Matthews served as the 8th and 12th chief justice of the Alaska Supreme Court. His service from May 1977 to April 2009 makes him the second-longest serving justice in Alaska history,slightly less than that of Jay Rabinowitz.

Incumbent Republican Governor Mike Dunleavy won re-election to a second term,becoming the first Republican governor to be re-elected to a second term since Jay Hammond in 1978 and the first governor,regardless of political affiliation,to be re-elected to a second term since Tony Knowles in 1998.
