The Department of Military Veterans is a sub-department of the Department of Defence that is responsible for providing support and services to veterans of the South African military, including veterans of the armed wings of anti-apartheid movements (Umkhonto we Sizwe and APLA). The political head of the department is the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans; as of 2021 [update] this is Thandi Modise. [1] Her deputy is Thabang Makwetla, and the administrative head of the department is Director-General Derrick Mgwebi.
The Australian Army is the principal land warfare force of Australia, a part of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) along with the Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Australian Air Force. The Army is commanded by the Chief of Army (CA), who is subordinate to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF) who commands the ADF. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) comprises the armed forces of South Africa. The commander of the SANDF is appointed by the President of South Africa from one of the armed services. Lieutenant General Andries Jacob Brink, was a South African military commander. An Afrikaner veteran of the Anglo-Boer War, he joined the Union Defence Forces (UDF) as a staff officer in 1912 and served in the First World War. He was Chief of the General Staff from 1920 to 1933, initially in command only of Defence HQ but, from 1922, of the whole UDF. He was also Secretary for Defence, head of the civil service Department of Defence, from 1922 to 1937. From 1937 to 1946 he was Commandant-in-Chief of the Burger Commandos, a home defence organisation.

Thandi Modise is a South African politician, and former Anti-Apartheid guerilla. She is currently serving as Minister of Defence & Military Veterans. She served as Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces from 2014 to 2019 and as Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2019 to 2021.
The Military Veterans Act, 2011 is an act of the Parliament of South Africa that declares the government responsible for governing the affairs of the country's military veterans. It also outlines the benefits available to these veterans and names the President of South Africa as their patron-in-chief. The Act further establishes an Advisory Council on Military Veterans and the Military Appeals Board. The Act was passed by Parliament on 16 August 2011 and was assented to by President Jacob Zuma on 2 December 2011.

It oversees the operations of the Department of Defence and Military Veterans and the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans as well as multiple statutory entities, including Armscor, the Castle Control Board, the Defence Force Service Commission, the Military Ombud, and Reserve Force Council.
Thabo Nelson Mmutle is a South African Member of Parliament for the African National Congress. He first became an MP at the 2019 general election. Mmutle is a former member of the national executive committee (NEC) of the African National Congress Youth League.
Patience Masisi is a South African military officer, who is currently serving as the Director Military Health Human Resources at the South African National Defence Force. She previously served as a defence advisor in Ghana. In 2006, she became the first black South African woman ever to have completed a commander's course at École Militaire.
