Dewi Liana Seriestha [3] (born 7 September 1989) is a Malaysian [4] singer, model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Malaysia World 2014. She represents her country at Miss World 2014 at London, England where she placed as one of the Top 25 quarter-finalist and also became the first Malaysian to win the Miss World Talent award. [5]

Early life

Seriestha was born in Kuching city centre but hails from Kampung Tematu, which is a residential neighbourhood in the Padawan suburban area of the city outside city limits.

Her father, Yudhi Seriestha is an Indonesian musician and singer of Chinese descent while her mother Catherine Noep anak Sigit is a Malaysian Bidayuh singer. She is the third of four siblings. [4] She won a national singing competition, Bintang Kecil RTM in 2000. [6] In 2005, she moved to Kuala Lumpur with her parents to pursue her career. [7] Seriestha graduated from National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA) in November 2015. [3]

Career

2005–2010: Mentor and Miss Fair and Lovely World Harvest Festival 2010

In 2005, Seriestha made her national television debut in a singing competition, Mentor, which was aired on TV3. [8] She was only 16 and was the youngest finalist of the show. Seriestha also ventured into acting. In 2009–2010, she acted for Malay drama, Kembali, Nilai Cinta Diana and Patung Cinta for Radio Televisyen Malaysia. [8]

In 2010, she joined a Sarawak-based beauty pageant Miss Fair & Lovely World Harvest Festival where she finished as first runner up and also a subsidiary title for Miss Talent. [9]

2014–2016: World Championships of Performing Arts, Miss World 2014 and first single

In 2014, Seriestha was chosen to represent Malaysia at World Championships of Performing Arts. [10] She won the gold medal for classical opera, three silver medals for contemporary, world music and variety category (vocal), a special accolade under Industry Award and a medal for classical champion of WCOPA. In August 2014, she was crowned as Miss World Malaysia 2014 at Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur where she had the rights to be the representative for Malaysia in Miss World 2014 held in London. She won the Miss World Talent title and was named one of the Top 25 quarter-finalist.

During the Eid al-Fitr in 2015, Seriestha joined other 10 celebrities for a charity show held in Kuching, Sarawak alongside Malaysian pop diva, Ziana Zain for the show "Aidilfitri with Ziana Zain & Friends". [11]

On 4 September 2015, Seriestha releases her first single, Hati Telah Dimiliki on Spotify [12] and iTunes. [13] The single is the theme song for a TV3 series, Waris Kasih.

In November 2015, she was awarded Asia Outstanding Achievement Award during the Asia Golden Dragon Awards 2015/2016 for her series of achievements during the WCOPA as well as the Miss World 2014. [3]

She performed at the national-level Chinese New Year open house at Sibu Town Square in February 2016. [14] The event was attended by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak. [14] In July 2016, she announced that her second single is still in the works and she would be signing with Warner Music Malaysia. [7] She composed the single herself. [7]

In December 2016, She performed at the national-level Christmas open house at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur alongside David Arumugam, Cassidy Anderson and Michael Leaner. [15] The event was attended by the then Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Tourism and Culture Minister Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai and Human Resources Minister Richard Riot Anak Jaem

2017–present: Second single, new label and first English single

Seriestha's second single, "Seindah Berdua" was released to digital platforms such as iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify on 20 January 2017, under Warner Music Malaysia. [16] In May 2017, she was chosen as the icon and a keynote speaker for International Dayak Culture Day in Bengkayang Regency, Indonesia. [17] She was also crowned as The Most Beautiful Dayak Woman during the Dayak Culture Day 2017. [17]

In July 2018, she performed in a musical theater, Sarawak: An Indigenous Journey. The musical theater is held in conjunction with the second edition of Rainforest Fringe Festival, a run-up to the Rainforest World Music Festival. [18] [19]

In October 2018, it was announced that her single "Seindah Berdua" has advanced into the semi-finals of the 33rd Anugerah Juara Lagu. [20]

Seriestha's first English single, "I Love You" was released on 1 February 2019. The song was co-written by herself and Mark Woods. [21] The music video for the single was released on YouTube on 24 April 2019.

In June 2019, she performed alongside Dennis Lau, Namewee, Aisyah Aziz, Jeryl Lee, Lee Elaine, Jimmy Sax, Dennis Yin, NAMA, and Fara Dolhadi for The Chosen by Dennis Lau & Friends Concert held at Mega Star Arena, Kuala Lumpur. [22] The concert represents the start of Lau's Give Back movement in collaboration with Teach For Malaysia (TFM). [23]

The Iban language is spoken by the Iban, one of the Dayak ethnic groups, who live in Brunei, the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan and in the Malaysian state of Sarawak. It belongs to the Malayic subgroup, a Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bidayuh</span> Ethnic group from Borneo

Bidayuh is the collective name for several indigenous groups found in southern Sarawak, Malaysia and northern West Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the island of Borneo, which are broadly similar in language and culture. The name Bidayuh means 'inhabitants of land'. Originally from the western part of Borneo, the collective name Land Dayak was first used during the period of Rajah James Brooke, the White Rajah of Sarawak. At times, they were also lesser referred to as Klemantan people. They constitute one of the main indigenous groups in Sarawak and West Kalimantan and live in towns and villages around Kuching and Serian in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, while in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan they are mainly concentrated in the northern Sanggau Regency. In Sarawak, most of Bidayuh population can be found within 40 km of the geographical area known as Greater Kuching, within the Kuching and Serian Division. They are the second-largest Dayak ethnic group in Sarawak after the Iban and one of the major Dayak tribes in West Kalimantan.

<i>The Borneo Post</i> Newspaper

The Borneo Post, established in 1978, is the largest and widely circulated English-language daily newspaper in East Malaysia and also the alternately circulated newspaper in Brunei. The newspaper is the first English newspaper in East Malaysia to use photo-composition for type-setting and printing was done in offset as against the old-fashioned letterpress.

Sarawak Malay is a Malayic language native to the State of Sarawak. It is a common language used by natives of Sarawak and also as the important mother tongue for the Sarawakian Malay people.

Depha Masterpiece is a Malaysian rock musician, songwriter, arranger, and producer from Sarawak. He is best known as the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the Bornean hard rock band, Masterpiece.

Masterpiece is an Iban rock band, which formed in 2003 as Masterjam in Sibu, Sarawak best known for its hit singles, "Sinu", "Kumang Seari" & "Ngarap Ka Nuan Nikal Pulai". The band comprises vocalist Depha Masterpiece, lead guitarist Willy Edwin, bassist Watt Marcus, drummer Harold Vincent, keyboardist Valentine Jimmy and Roslee Qadir. The group was renamed Masterpiece in 2005 after Depha was hired as the band's new vocalist. Drummer Roni,guitarist Kennedy Edwin ,keyboardist Dellender Wilson and Timothy are former members of the band.

The 18th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly was a term of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, the legislative branch of the Government of Sarawak in Sarawak, Malaysia. Miss Malaysia World 2014, the 48th edition of Miss World Malaysia, was held at the Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on August 30, 2014. Melinder Bhullar of Kuala Lumpur crowned her successor, Dewi Liana Seriestha from Sarawak at the end of the event.

Miss Universe Malaysia 2018, the 52nd edition of the Miss Universe Malaysia, was held on 11 January 2018 at the Majestic Araneta Auditorium, Kuala Lumpur. Jane Teoh of Penang was crowned by the outgoing titleholder, Samantha James of Kuala Lumpur at the end of the event. She then represented Malaysia at the Miss Universe 2018 pageant in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 2021 Sarawak state election, formally the 12th Sarawak general election, took place on 18 December 2021. This election was to elect 82 members of the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly. The previous assembly was dissolved on 3 November 2021.

Miss World Malaysia 2018, the 51st edition of the Miss World Malaysia and the first edition under a new management was held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching in Sarawak on 8 September 2018.
