Political career
McBroom was formerly a member of the Waucedah Township Zoning Board of Appeals. [2] From January 2011 to 2016,McBroom was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives;he was not eligible to seek reelection due to term limits. [2] In 2015,McBroom was the chairman of the special House committee that considered disciplinary proceedings against state Representatives Cindy Gamrat and Todd Courser. [4] [5] Gamrat,along with a majority of the special committee,recommended the expulsion of both members. [4] [6] Gamrat was expelled,while Courser resigned after it became clear that the chamber had the votes to expel him. [4]
McBroom was elected to the Michigan Senate in November 2018,with 54.4% of the vote,defeating Democratic nominee Scott Dianda. [7] He took office in January 2019. [2] McBroom succeeded term-limited incumbent Republican Tom Casperson. [8] Immediately upon taking office,he hired Casperson as his constituent relations and legislative aide. [7] Casperson died in 2020. [9]
2020 presidential election
In the 2020 presidential election,Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump,and won Michigan by more than 150,000 votes. Trump sought to subvert the election results and remain in power,in part by falsely claiming that he won Michigan. [10] Trump's lies was rejected by multiple courts and by the Michigan secretary of state. [10] As chair of the Senate Oversight Committee,McBroom led an exhaustive investigation into the 2020 election in Michigan. [3] In June 2021,after an eight-month investigation,his committee issued a final report debunking Trump's claim of a "stolen" election. [10] [3] Regarding the Trump fake electors plot,McBroom told the Associated Press,"They were wrong. And other people followed them when they shouldn't have." [11] However,McBroom refused to comply with a subpoena issued by the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack,saying that he had no relevant information and viewed the subpoena as an infringement of Michigan's sovereignty. [12] The Michigan committee's report was,however,entered into the January 6 Committee's formal record. [12] Trump disparaged McBroom for failing to support his false election claims. [10] Nevertheless,McBroom endorsed Trump's 2024 campaign for president. [10]
Energy and environment
McBroom has called for rolling back environmental regulations. [13] In 2022,McBroom introduced a resolution opposing proposals to designate four areas within the Ottawa National Forest (the Ehlco area,Trap Hills,Norwich Plains,and Sturgeon River Gorge) as protected federal wilderness areas. [14] [15] An opponent of federal protections for the gray wolf,McBroom denounced a 2022 decision by federal judge who determined that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had violated the Endangered Species Act by removing protections for wolf populations in the Midwest and parts of the West without adequate grounds. [16] McBroom also opposed the Menominee Indian Tribe's proposal to add some lands on the decommissioned Sawyer Air Force Base,near the Menominee River,to the National Register of Historic Places,saying that he believed that listing on the register could halt the Back Forty Mine project,which McBroom supports. [17]
In 2023,McBroom signed a letter in support of the proposal to build the Enbridge Line 5 oil pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. [18] The same year,McBroom voted against a clean-energy and climate change mitigation bill that created a requirement for electricity utilities to achieve a portfolio of 100% non-carbon-emitting energy by 2040 (with a requirement to achieve 50% by 2030–2034 and 80% by 2035). The bill passed the state Senate on a 20–18 party-line vote. [19]
Other issues
In 2023,McBroom voted against legislation to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect against discrimination in housing,employment,and public accommodations on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity;in a floor speech against the bill,McBroom contended that it would "create impossible-to-resolve conflicts for churches,individuals,employers and employees." In 2020,McBroom sponsored legislation that allowed most one-time DUI offenders to obtain expungement of their criminal record from a judge. The bill passed both chambers by wide margins;in January 2021,Governor Gretchen Whitmer pocket-vetoed the legislation. [21]

He formerly served as a Republican member of the Michigan State Senate, representing the 38th district, which includes much of the Upper Peninsula. He previously served in the Michigan State House of Representatives, representing the 108th district.
Judith Kaczmarczyk Nerat was a Democratic politician and member of the Michigan State House of Representatives. Nerat was elected to represent the 108th State House district on November 4, 2008. The 108th district is located in the Upper Peninsula and includes all of Delta, Dickinson, and Menominee counties. Nerat previously ran for the same seat in 2006, losing to then incumbent Representative Tom Casperson.
Rick Outman is a Republican politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Michigan Senate, elected from the 33rd Senate district. From 2019 to 2023, Shirkey was the majority leader of the Michigan State Senate.
Todd Anthony Courser is an American lawyer, Tea Party Republican politician, and former member of the Michigan House of Representatives who resigned his seat when it became clear that he would be expelled for misconduct and the misuse of taxpayer resources in an attempt to cover up his extramarital affair with fellow Representative Cindy Gamrat.
Cindy Gamrat is a former Republican member of the Michigan House of Representatives, representing the 80th district. She was first elected in 2014, after playing a leading role in organizing the Tea Party movement in Michigan. She engaged in an extramarital affair with fellow Representative Todd Courser, and was expelled from the House in September 2015 for using taxpayer resources in an attempt to cover up the affair.
Lee Roberson Chatfield is an American former politician and a Republican former member of the Michigan House of Representatives. He was first elected from the 107th House district in 2015. He was speaker pro tempore from 2017 to 2019, and speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2019 to 2021. In April 2024 he was charged with thirteen felony counts of embezzlement, larceny and conspiracy involving spending private foundation and state money for personal use while he was Speaker of the Michigan House.

Jim Runestad is an American politician. A Republican, he has been a member of the Michigan State Senate, representing the 23rd district, since 2023. He was previously a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2015 to 2018. In 2020, Runestad was one of 11 Republican state senators in Michigan who supported Donald Trump's effort to overturn the result of the presidential election and remain in power.

The 2022 Michigan gubernatorial election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the governor of Michigan. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer ran for re-election to a second term and faced former political commentator Tudor Dixon in the general election. Whitmer defeated Dixon by a margin of 10.6 percentage points, a wider margin than polls indicated as well as a wider margin than Whitmer's first victory four years prior. According to Ron Brownstein of CNN in 2023, Whitmer won independent voters by double-digit margins, which contributed to Dixon's defeat.
Michigan's 38th Senate district is one of 38 districts in the Michigan Senate. The 38th district was created with the adoption of the 1963 Michigan Constitution, as the previous 1908 state constitution only permitted 34 senatorial districts. It has been represented by Republican Ed McBroom since 2019, succeeding fellow Republican Tom Casperson.
Peter James Meijer is an American politician and business analyst who served as the U.S. representative for Michigan's 3rd congressional district from 2021 to 2023. A member of the Republican Party, Meijer was a candidate in the 2024 United States Senate election in Michigan to succeed Debbie Stabenow. He dropped out on April 26, 2024.

After the results of the 2020 United States presidential election determined U.S. president Donald Trump had lost, a scheme was devised by him, his associates and Republican Party officials in seven states to subvert the election by creating and submitting fraudulent certificates of ascertainment to falsely claim Trump had won the electoral college vote in those states. The intent of the scheme was to pass the fraudulent certificates to then-vice president Mike Pence in the hope he would count them, rather than the authentic certificates, and thus overturn Joe Biden's victory. This scheme was defended by a fringe legal theory developed by Trump attorneys Kenneth Chesebro and John Eastman, detailed in the Eastman memos, which claimed a vice president has the constitutional discretion to swap official electors with an alternate slate during the certification process, thus changing the outcome of the electoral college vote and the overall winner of the presidential race. The scheme came to be known as the Pence Card. By April 2024, dozens of Republican state officials and Trump associates had been indicted in four states for their alleged involvement. The federal Smith special counsel investigation is investigating Trump's role in the events. Testimony has revealed that Trump was fully aware of the fake electors scheme, and knew that Eastman's plan for Pence to obstruct the certification of electoral votes was a violation of the Electoral Count Act.
Angela Rigas is an American politician from Michigan. A member of the Republican Party, she was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in the 2022 election from the 79th district, and took office in 2023. After the 2020 presidential election, Rigas denied the election result and took part in the rally that preceded the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
