Hanke Gerdina Johannette Bruins Slot (born 20 October 1977) is a Dutch politician and military veteran who has been serving as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mark Rutte since 2023. [1] She previously was the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations from 2022 to 2023. [2]

Early career

Prior to her political career, Bruins Slot served in the Royal Netherlands Army; she was deployed to Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan. [3] In 2010, she was conferred the rank of artillery captain.

A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), Bruins Slot served in the House of Representatives from 2010 to 2019. She focused her work as a parliamentarian on matters of defence personnel, local government, healthcare science, medical law, psychiatry and sports.

From 2019 to 2022, Bruins Slot was a member of the provincial executive of Utrecht, in which she was in charge of nature, agriculture, soil and water, sport and governance. [4]

In February 2024, she stated that Israel's planned assault on Rafah was "unjustifiable". [5]

In April 2024 the European Commission co-hosted a conference on "restoring justice for Ukraine" in The Hague. Significant contributors were Slot as the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba and the Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders. [6]

In May 2024, Bruins Slot said that the Netherlands would not object if Ukraine used Dutch-supplied F-16 fighters to strike targets inside Russia. [7]

Personal life

Slot was born in Apeldoorn and grew up in Winsum, Zeewolde, and Ridderkerk. She is married. Her father, grandfather and uncle have all been mayors. [8] [9]

The fourth Rutte cabinet is the current cabinet of the Netherlands. It was inaugurated on 10 January 2022. The cabinet is a continuation of the third Rutte cabinet and is formed by the conservative liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the social liberal Democrats 66 (D66) and the Christian democratic Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and Christian Union (CU) after the election of 2021. The cabinet fell on 7 July 2023, after failing to reach an agreement on separate treatment of refugees fleeing from war. As a result, the cabinet became demissionary.

Henk Staghouwer is a Dutch administrator and Christian Union politician. He served as Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality in the fourth Rutte cabinet from 10 January to 5 September 2022. From 24 April 2013 to 10 January 2022 he was a member of the provincial executive of Groningen.

Richard van Zwol is a Dutch civil servant who has been a member of the Council of State since 2017. He led three government ministries as secretary general: General Affairs (2007–2011), Finance (2011–2013) and Interior and Kingdom Relations (2013–2017). A member of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), Van Zwol has been involved in several cabinet formations.
