The IHF World Player of the Year is a handball award given annually to the player who is considered to have performed the best in the previous season, both at club and international competitions. It is awarded based on votes from experts, media and fans.
The award was awarded by IHF since 1988 in both Men's and Women's Category separately.
No award was awarded in the years 1991, 1992, 1993 and 2017. [1] [2]
While the IHF has only reported awards since 1988, other players have been voted best players in the world before.
Thus, the Romanian Ștefan Birtalan was elected World Player of the Year in 1974, 1976 and 1977. [14] And Ioan Moser of Romania was also named "Best Handball Player in the World” in 1964. [15]
In 1992, Gheorghe Gruia of Romania was named Best Player of All Time by the International Handball Federation. [16] [17]
In 2000, the Swedish Magnus Wislander and the Ukrainian Zinaida Turchyna were elected Players of the 20th Century by the IHF. [18] [19]
Additionally, in 2010 Ivano Balić of Croatia and Svetlana Kitić of Yugoslavia were voted by the website users the Best Players Ever, but they were not named directly by the IHF. [20] [21]
In 2000, the official bulletin of the International Handball Federation, World Handball Magazine, chose Gheorghe Gruia, Ioan Moser and Cornel Penu as members of the "Team of the Century". [22]
In 2010, the fans voted Thierry Omeyer as world's best goalkeeper ever. [23] And in 2011, the fans voted for Luminița Dinu (born Huțupan) as best female goalkeeper ever. [24]
Previously in 2009, Steffen Fäth and Cristina Neagu respectively won Rookie of the Year award for male and female. [25]
Hans Einar Magnus Wislander is a Swedish former handball player, who has been voted Handball Player of the Century. Since his debut in the national team in 1985 he has played over 380 games and scored over 1,000 goals. He played for Redbergslids IK, Gothenburg and THW Kiel.
The 2005 World Women's Handball Championship, the 17th team handball world championship for women, was played in Saint Petersburg, Russia between 5 and 18 December 2005. Russia won their second title.
The Romanian women's national team represents Romania in senior women's international handball and is controlled by the Romanian Handball Federation, the governing body for handball in Romania. It competes in the three major international tournaments; the Olympic Games, the IHF World Championship and the EHF European Championship.
The France national handball team is supervised by the French Handball Federation, and represents France in international matches. It is the first handball team to have held all three titles twice, and the only national team in its sport to hold six world titles and a total of eleven medals at the World Men's Handball Championship. With a total of five medals, including three gold in 2008, 2012 and 2021, France is also the most successful Handball team at the Summer Olympics. As of January 2024, they are the defending Olympic and European Champions.
Ivano Balić is a Croatian former professional handballer who is currently part of the coaching staff at RK Split. Renowned for his speed, creativity, movement and charisma as a player, Balić won the 2003 World Championship and the Olympic gold medal in 2004 with the Croatian national team, and thirteen titles playing for clubs in Croatia, Spain and Germany. He also received two World Championship silver medals, two silver and one bronze European Championship medal, and one Olympic bronze medal (2012) with the national team.

Eduarda Idalina "Duda" Amorim Taleska is a Brazilian-Hungarian former handball player. She played most of her career in Győr as a player of Győri ETO KC, for whom she won five editions of the EHF Champions League. Amorim also played for Brazil women's national handball team for 15 years, winning the 2013 World Women's Handball Championship.
