The International Year of Crystallography (abbreviation: IYCr2014) is an event promoted in the year 2014 by the United Nations to celebrate the centenary of the discovery of X-ray crystallography and to emphasise the global importance of crystallography in human life.
UNESCO and the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) are responsible for this event.
The opening ceremony of the International Year of Crystallography was held in Paris on 20 and 21 January 2014. [1] Many activities will follow to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography all over the world. [1]
The event drew the attention of the BBC [2] and the Spanish newspaper El País. [3]
Most crystallographic organisation in the world are organizing different events. They include among others the International Union of Crystallography, the European Crystallographic Association, the American Crystallographic Association, the Turkish Crystallographic Association and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Kristallographie.
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, India, Israel, Italy, Liechtenstein, North Korea, Mexico, Moldavia, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea and Switzerland issued special stamps for the occasion. [4]
Crystallography is the experimental science of determining the arrangement of atoms in crystalline solids. Crystallography is a fundamental subject in the fields of materials science and solid-state physics. The word crystallography is derived from the Ancient Greek word κρύσταλλος, with its meaning extending to all solids with some degree of transparency, and γράφειν. In July 2012, the United Nations recognised the importance of the science of crystallography by proclaiming that 2014 would be the International Year of Crystallography.

The Gibraltar Football Association or also Gibraltar FA (GFA) is the governing body for Gibraltarian football and futsal. It was formed as the Gibraltar Civilian Football Association in 1895, changing to its current name in later years. It is one of the oldest football associations in the world. From October 2012, the GFA were provisional members of UEFA and the Gibraltar national futsal team, under-19 and under-17 representative teams participated in the 2013/14 UEFA season competitions. At the XXXVII UEFA Congress held in London on 24 May 2013, Gibraltar was accepted as a full member of UEFA. Gibraltar were admitted to FIFA as a full member on 13 May 2016 at the 66th FIFA Congress in Mexico.

The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) is a non-profit organisation based in Cambridge, England. Its primary activity is the compilation and maintenance of the Cambridge Structural Database, a database of small molecule crystal structures. They also perform analysis on the database for the benefit of the scientific community, and write and distribute computer software to allow others to do the same.

Cecil Arnold Beevers was a British crystallographer, known for Beevers–Lipson strips, a computational aid for calculating Fourier transforms to determine the structure of crystals from crystallographic data, enabling the creation of models for complex molecules.
Elspeth Frances Garman is professor of molecular biophysics at the University of Oxford and a former President of the British Crystallographic Association. She is also Senior Kurti Research Fellow at Brasenose College, Oxford. The "Garman limit", which is the radiation dose limit of a cryocooled protein crystal, is named after her.
The French Crystallographic Association (AFC) brings together physicists, chemists and biologists that use crystals and crystallography in their research or develop new crystallographic methods. Originally part of the French Society of Mineralogy, the AFC was founded in 1953 by Hubert Curien and André Guinier. Today, its main goals are to promote dissemination of knowledge and exchange between French speaking crystallographers from all fields, and in particular to organize or support specialized or interdisciplinary workshops and conferences, educational actions and training courses in the area of crystallography. During the biannual AFC conferences, the AFC awards three PhD prizes in each of its research areas: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The German Crystallographic Society is a non-profit organization based in Berlin. As a voluntary association of scientists working in crystallography or interested in crystallography and other people and institutions, its goal is to promote crystallography in teaching, research and industrial practice as well as in the public, in particular by fostering the exchange of experience and ideas as well as further education at national and international level Frame. Working groups are dedicated to specific areas of crystallography. The Society has just over 1000 members.
