List of state presidents of the Indian National Congress

The state president of the Indian National Congress is the state-level highest command of the Indian National Congress (INC), responsible for indulging in political campaigns at state level. [1] State presidents shoulder a diverse array of roles and responsibilities integral to the effective functioning of the party at the state-level. Also known as the leader of the state and UT party, a state president is chosen by the party president.

Contents

Being the higher decision making body, state presidents actively contribute to the formulation of state-level policies, representing the party's stance on relevant issues and engaging in the development and implementation of election strategies during state elections. [2] In addition, a state presidents is tasked with overseeing the organizational structure of the Pradesh Congress Committee, including the appointment and coordination of leaders at various levels viz. District committee, block committee and for each panchayat development block or panchayat samiti. [1] Serving as a spokesperson for the party in the state, they communicate the party's positions to the media and keep party members informed about policies and decisions. State presidents also play a pivotal role in building and maintaining the party's membership, reaching out to diverse sections of society, and addressing their concerns to advance the party's agenda. [3]

Conflict resolution within the party, fundraising activities, and the establishment of political alliances with other parties at the state level are also within the purview of the state president. They act as representatives of the Pradesh Congress Committee in interactions with the central leadership of the Indian National Congress, providing feedback and information about the state's political landscape and challenges. [1] As of now, the INC has state and UT presidents for all states and union territory in India.

He has also previously served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007 and 2017 to 2021. His father was the last Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala. He has also served in the Indian Army from 1963 to 1966. In 1980, he won a seat in the Lok Sabha for the first time. As of November 2022, Singh also serves as the chairman of the Punjab Urdu Academy. Captain Singh resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab on 18 September 2021. On 19 September 2022 he merged his party PLC with BJP and joined BJP on the same day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Virbhadra Singh</span> Indian politician (1934–2021)

Virbhadra Singh was an Indian politician who served 6 terms and 21 years as the 4th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. A leader of the Indian National Congress party, he was elected 9 times as a Member of Legislative Assembly to the Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha and 5 times as Member of Parliament to the Lok Sabha. Virbhadra Singh was popularly known by the honorific Raja Sahib. Singh holds the distinction of being the longest serving Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, holding the office from 1983 to 1990, from 1993 to 1998, from 2003 to 2007 and finally from 2012 to 2017, when he was succeeded by the BJP's Jai Ram Thakur. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1962, 1967, 1971, 1980 and 2009. Singh served as a Union Minister in the governments of Indira Gandhi and Manmohan Singh. At the time of his demise, he was serving as an MLA from Arki constituency.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Digvijaya Singh</span> 14th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, India

Digvijaya Singh is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He is Ex-General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party's All India Congress Committee. Previously, he had served as the 14th Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, a central Indian state, for two terms from 1993 to 2003. Prior to that he was a minister in Chief Minister Arjun Singh's cabinet between 1980 and 1984. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections he was defeated by Pragya Singh Thakur for Bhopal Lok Sabha seat.

Akhilesh Yadav is an Indian politician and national president of the Samajwadi Party who served as the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Having assumed the chief minister's office on 15 March 2012 at the age of 38, he is the youngest person to have held the office till date. Yadav is the Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly since March 2022, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Kannauj in the 18th Lok Sabha, and an elected Member of Legislative Assembly for Karhal in the 18th Vidhan Sabha.

Rajinder Kaur Bhattal is an Indian politician and member of Congress who served as the 14th Chief Minister of Punjab from 1996 to 1997 and 2nd Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab from 2004 to 2007. She is the first and so far only female to hold the office of Chief Minister in Punjab. Overall she is 8th female Chief Minister and 3rd female deputy chief minister in India. Since 1992 she has won from Lehra Assembly Constituency five terms consecutively.

Rajnath Singh is an Indian politician and lecturer who served as the 29th Defence Minister of India from 2019-24. He is currently the deputy Leader of the House, Lok Sabha since 2014. He was the 8th President of Bharatiya Janata Party from 2005 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2014. He is a veteran leader of the BJP who started his career as a RSS Swayamsevak.

Kateekal Sankaranarayanan was the governor of the Indian state of Maharashtra. He had also served as the governor of Nagaland and Jharkhand. Prior to his appointment as governor, he had served as a minister in several Congress led governments of Kerala headed by Chief Ministers A K Antony and K. Karunakaran. On 24 August 2014, he was transferred by the NDA government to Mizoram.

Ashish Butail is an Indian politician, tea planter and entrepreneur. He belongs to the Indian National Congress party, and has been elected to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Palampur since 2018. He currently serves as Chief Parliamentary Secretary in Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s cabinet.
