Meaghan Mikkelson (born January 4, 1985) is a Canadian ice hockey player, broadcaster, and former member of the Canadian national ice hockey team. She is currently affiliated with the Calgary chapter of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA).
Mikkelson grew up in St. Albert, Alberta, [1] and represented Team Alberta at the 2003 Canada Winter Games [2] in Bathurst and Campbellton, New Brunswick, as the Alberta team finished in seventh position. [3]
In 2007, Mikkelson tied for 11th in the NCAA with 42 points in 34 games and tied for sixth with 32 assists. Among defencemen, she was second in the country during the regular season with 1.24 points per game and ninth overall with .94 assists per game. During the 2006–07 NCAA season, she was part of the Wisconsin defence that allowed a nation's best 0.94 goals per game and 15 shutouts, a school record. In the WCHA, she led all defencemen with 33 points in 28 league games and was fifth overall. She tied for second in the league with 24 assists.
Mikkelson made her Team Canada debut with the National Women's Team at the 2007 Fall Festival. She appeared in her first IIHF World Women's Championship in 2008. [4] In the gold medal game of the 2010 Four Nations Cup, she had a goal and an assist for Canada. With 1:49 left in the third period, she scored to tie the game and force overtime. [5] In a game versus Russia at the 2012 IIHF Women's World Championship, she registered three assists in a 14–1 victory. [6] She won a gold medal during the 2010 Winter Olympics and was named to the 2014 Winter Olympics roster for Canada, [7] when she again won a gold medal. She won a silver medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics. [8]
Prior to being selected third overall in the 2011 Draft of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, Mikkelson played with the Edmonton Chimos of the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL). She was selected by the Alberta Honeybadgers, a team later renamed as Team Alberta CWHL but eventually called the Calgary Inferno. [9] Appearing in the 2016 Clarkson Cup, she registered one assist as the Inferno emerged victorious in the 8-3 final game win. [10] She was one of two captains for Team Blue in the 3rd CWHL All-Star Game, the first time that one team in the CWHL All-Star Game had two captains. [11]
Mikkelson is currently a commentator on Calgary Flames radio game broadcasts [15] after occasionally appearing on televised NHL games on Sportsnet since 2020 as an analyst on intermission panel discussion segments.
In June 2011, Mikkelson married minor league goaltender Scott Reid. The couple met in 2007 when they worked together at a hockey school in Edmonton. [16] Their son was born in September 2015 in Calgary, and their daughter was born four years later. [17] [18] [19]
She participated in various festivities commemorating the 2012 NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa, Ontario. Said festivities included attendance at Rideau Hall for the NHL Hockey is for Everyone event, [20] interviews at the Sirius XM Stage (along with a fan question and answer period) at the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fair. [21] In addition, she participated in the Energizer Night Skate at the Ottawa Rink of Dreams (relocated from the Rideau Canal), [22] and attended the Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday, January 28.
In June 2014, Mikkelson and her teammate Natalie Spooner appeared as contestants in the second season of The Amazing Race Canada . They finished the race in 2nd place. [23] In the ice hockey skills challenge Detour "Puck It" combined with partner Spooner to shoot 4 from 4 on the 1 through 4 "hole" targets, then 1 from 53 attempting to hit the final five-hole target. At the end of the show, after arriving in first place for seven times in a total of eleven legs, the golden girls got the official second place of the competition, losing to the best buddies, Mickey and Pete. She and Spooner were voted the fan favourite team of the season. [24]
Her father, Bill Mikkelson, played four seasons in the NHL in the early 1970s with the Los Angeles Kings, the New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals. [1] Her brother, Brendan, was a Memorial Cup champion with the WHL's Vancouver Giants, a second round pick, 31st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, played five seasons in the NHL and now plays for the Cardiff Devils in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). Her great uncle, Jimmy McFadden, won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 1948, and the Stanley Cup in 1950. [25]
Caroline Ouellette OC is a Canadian retired ice hockey player and current associate head coach of the Concordia Stingers women's ice hockey program. She was a member of the Canadian national women's ice hockey team and a member of Canadiennes de Montreal in the Canadian Women's Hockey League. Among her many accomplishments are four Olympic gold medals, 12 IIHF Women's World Championship medals, 12 Four Nations Cup medals and four Clarkson Cup championships.
Marie-Philip Poulin (born March 28, 1991) is a Canadian ice hockey forward and captain of the Canadian national ice hockey team, currently signed in the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) with the Montreal PWHL team.
Meghan Duggan is an American former ice hockey forward and director of player development for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League. She played for the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2014 Winter Olympics, winning two silver medals; she was the captain of the U.S. team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where she won a gold medal. She also represented the United States at eight Women's World Championships, capturing seven gold medals and one silver medal. Duggan played collegiate hockey with the Wisconsin Badgers between 2006 and 2011. After her senior season (2010–11), Duggan was named the winner of the Patty Kazmaier Award, presented annually to the top women's ice hockey player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). After her career at Wisconsin, Duggan was the team's all-time leading scorer. She was drafted 8th overall by the Boston Blades in the 2011 CWHL Draft.
Hilary Atwood Knight is an American ice hockey forward with the Boston PWHL team and the United States women's national ice hockey team. She previously played for the Les Canadiennes de Montreal of the CWHL and the Boston Pride of the NWHL, with whom she won the inaugural Isobel Cup.
Kerry Pauline Weiland Sorbara is an American retired ice hockey and inline hockey player, a defenseman. As a member of the United States women's national ice hockey team, she won four IIHF Women's World Championship medals and a silver medal in the 2010 Olympic women's ice hockey tournament.
Haley Lyn Irwin is a Canadian ice hockey player. She was a member of the 2009–10 Hockey Canada national women's team and played for the Calgary Inferno and Montreal Stars of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) and played for the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs in the NCAA. She served as Canada's captain in a gold-medal winning effort at the 2014 4 Nations Cup in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Rebecca Anne Johnston is a Canadian ice hockey player for the Calgary section of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association and, since 2007, the Canadian national team. She played four seasons at Cornell University and was selected second overall in the 2012 CWHL Draft by the Calgary Inferno. As of 2022, she has three Winter Olympic gold medals, one silver, and two world championship titles.
Natalie Marie Spooner is a Canadian ice hockey player for the now defunct Toronto Furies, who played for the Canadian National women's ice hockey team from 2007 to 2008, and rejoined the program in 2010.
Brianne Alexandra Jenner is a Canadian professional ice hockey player and a member of Canada's national women's hockey team, currently affiliated with the Ottawa of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She made her debut for Canada at the 2010 Four Nations Cup and won a gold medal. She was also a member of the Cornell Big Red women's ice hockey program.
Iya Viktorovna Gavrilova is a Russian ice hockey player, currently affiliated with the Calgary section of the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA). She was a member of the Russian national team during 2003 to 2016 and represented Russia at the Winter Olympic Games in 2006, 2010, and 2014, and at eleven IIHF Women's World Championships, winning bronze medals at the tournaments in 2013 and 2016 At the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain, Gavrilova was part of Russia's gold medal-winning team, the first team to defeat Canada in FISU women's ice hockey history.
Jocelyne Dawn Marie Larocque is a Canadian ice hockey player for Toronto PWHL team of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL). She previously played in the PWHPA, with the Calgary Inferno and Markham Thunder of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL), the Calgary Oval X-Treme and Manitoba Maple Leafs of the Western Women's Hockey League (WWHL), and the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). With the Bulldogs, she was a two-time NCAA Women's Ice Hockey Tournament champion. Larocque is of Métis heritage and was the first indigenous athlete to participate in the women's ice hockey tournament at the Winter Olympics.
Brianna Decker is an American former professional ice hockey forward who played for the Wisconsin Badgers, Boston Blades, Boston Pride, Calgary Inferno, Professional Women's Hockey Players Association, and United States women's national ice hockey team. She won the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Award while playing for the University of Wisconsin, recognizing the best female ice hockey player in NCAA Division I play. With the Boston Pride, Decker would score the first hat trick in NWHL history on October 25, 2015.

The Calgary Inferno was a women's ice hockey team that joined the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL) for the 2011–12 season. The team played its home games at Joan Snyder Rink at WinSport Canada in Calgary, Alberta. After two seasons without an official name, in 2013 the team picked a moniker drawing from Calgary's National Hockey League franchise, the Calgary Flames, with whom they had a partnership. For the 2013-14 season, it was announced that all Inferno home-games would be streamed live by PCSN.tv.
Laura Michele Fortino is an Italian-Canadian ice hockey defenceman and coach, currently playing in the Italian Hockey League Women (IHLW) with the EV Bozen Eagles. A former member of the Canadian national team, she won two Olympic medals and six World Championship medals during 2011 to 2019.
Jessica Campbell is a Canadian women's ice hockey coach for the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the American Hockey League. She was formerly a player for the Malmö Redhawks of the Damettan. She made her debut with the Canada women's national ice hockey team at the 2014 4 Nations Cup.
Laura Rachel Stacey is a Canadian ice hockey player for the Montreal PWHL team, and a member of the Canadian women's national ice hockey team. She previously played with the Markham Thunder and the Dartmouth Big Green and competed internationally with the Canadian women's national under-18 and under-22 teams. She won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics and a gold medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Megan Bozek is an American ice hockey player and member of the United States national team. She most recently played with the KRS Vanke Rays of the Zhenskaya Hockey League (ZhHL) during the 2020–21 season.
Jessica Wong, also known by the Chinese name Wang Yuting, is a Canadian ice hockey player, a defenceman. She most recently played with the Chinese national ice hockey team and in the Zhenskaya Hockey League (ZhHL) with the KRS Vanke Rays during the 2021–22 season. She was drafted first overall in the 2013 CWHL Draft by the Calgary Inferno and played four seasons in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL).
Blayre Turnbull is a Canadian ice hockey player for the Toronto PWHL team. She made her debut with the Canada women's national ice hockey team at the 2014 4 Nations Cup.
