The Mississauga Eagles P.S.C. were a soccer team that operated in the Canadian Professional Soccer League for only one season. The club came into existence in 1998, and become a founding member of the inaugural CPSL. The franchise achieved little success in the league, and failed to qualify for postseason. At the start of the 1999 CPSL season the club folded, and were replaced by the Oshawa Flames.

History

In 1998, the Mississauga Eagles P.S.C. were founded and became an original member of the newly formed Canadian Professional Soccer League. [1] [2] Their home venue would become Wildwood Park located in Malton, Mississauga. [3] The Mississauga franchise was owned and coached by Josef Komlodi, a former professional player in Hungary, and Germany. Notable players signed by the team were Hungarian import Attila Kovacs, and Vladimir Koval, a veteran from the Canadian National Soccer League. [4] The club debuted on May 31, 1998, in a match against the York Region Shooters, and were defeated by a score of 3–1. [5] Throughout the entire season Mississauga achieved little success within the league, and finished in a tie for seventh place with 10 points. One controversial event occurred on July 26, 1998, in a match against North York Astros, where Mississauga protested the match due to a dispute with team owner Komlodi and North York owner Bruno Ierullo about North York using a reserve team which operated in the Peel-Halton Regional Soccer League which violated Mississauga's territorial rights as the league operated within the boundaries of Mississauga's territory. The outcome of the event resulted in a forfeit for the Eagles, and a 2–0 victory for the Astros. [6] After a disappointing last place finish, in January 1999, the Eagles decided to fold.

The 2002 Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the fifth season for the Canadian Professional Soccer League. The season began on May 23, 2002, and concluded on October 20, 2002, with Ottawa Wizards becoming the first expansion franchise to win the CPSL Championship by defeating the North York Astros 2–0. For the first time the final was hosted at Esther Shiner Stadium, which granted the hosts the North York Astros a wildcard match. As the league was divided into the Eastern and Western Conferences the Wizards clinched the Eastern title, while Toronto Croatia won the Western Conference. The expansion of the league saw the return of professional soccer to Hamilton, and the addition of another Toronto franchise. On February 26, 2002, the CPSL signed a player agreement deal with the Toronto Lynx of the USL A-League, which provided the Lynx access in order to use CPSL talent and provide players an opportunity to play at a higher level.

The 1999 Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the second season under the Canadian Professional Soccer League name. The season began on May 28, 1999, and concluded on October 2, 1999, with Toronto Olympians defeating Toronto Croatia 2-0 to claim their first CPSL Championship. The Olympians made history by becoming the first club in the league's history to achieve a treble. For the second straight season, they went undefeated for the entire season. The league also introduced their first All-Star match where the CPSL All-Stars faced the CSA Development team.

The 1998Canadian Professional Soccer League season was the inaugural season under the Canadian Professional Soccer League name. The season began on May 31, 1998, and concluded on October 14, 1998, with the St. Catharines Wolves defeating the Toronto Olympians in 4-2 victory in a penalty shootout to claim the first CPSL Championship held at Centennial Park Stadium in Toronto, Ontario. Though Toronto was denied the treble they still managed to go undefeated the entire regular season, and dominate the league with the best offensive and defensive record.
