The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) a public university located at Ho in the Volta Region of Ghana. UHAS is one of the youngest public universities in Ghana. Its operation started in September 2012, when the first batch of 154 students were admitted. [2]
The university was established by an Act of Parliament(Act 828), [3] which received presidential approval in December 2011. It, however, started admitting students in 2012. The university is devoted to teaching, research and service in the Health Sciences. [4] [5]
The university was formed with an Interim University Council that governs the affairs of the school chaired by Prof. Kofi Anyidoho, MA(Bloomington), PhD(Austin). The Foundation Vice-Chancellor was Professor Fred Newton Binka, MBChB (Legon), MPH (Jerusalem), PhD (Basel) who served from March 2012 to July 2016. In August, 2017, a new council was inaugurated with Justice Jones Victor Mawulorm Dotse as the chairman. Other members of the council comprise Professor John Owusu Gyapong (Vice-Chancellor, UHAS) ; Professor Victor Gadzekpo (Member),Dr. Sylvia Ayeley Deganus (Member), Dr. Nana Owusu-Afari (Member),Mr. Richard K. The university has two campuses:
Professor Lydia Aziato is the current Vice-Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences. [7] In a special meeting held on June 3, 2022, the Governing Council of the University of Health and Allied Sciences approved the appointment of Prof. Aziato as the new Vice-Chancellor. [8] Effective August 1, 2022, Prof. Aziato assumes the prestigious position, [9] becoming the first woman and a nurse to hold the role of Vice-Chancellor in the history of the University. [10]
The university runs seven schools, one institute with four centres and a basic school. [11] [6]
Directorates
The university has a Research Ethics Committee REC that is charged with oversight responsibilities of reviewing and approving all research planned to be conducted in the university's facilities and/or involve the staff or students of the university. The goal of the REC is to protect the rights and welfare of human participants in research studies. [21]
The REC is made of seven (7) Scientists/Academics and 8 Non-scientists; including A lawyer, Journalist, Religious Body Representing the larger Community, Sociologist, Educationist, Traditional leader, Public Health Expert and a Medical Doctor [21]
The officers of the REC include the chair, Vice Chair and the Administrator. [21]

The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) was ranked second in Ghana and 36th in Africa in the World Scientist and University Rankings 2021 by AD Scientific Index, beating out KNUST, UCC, and GIMPA, among other universities. [30]
UHAS achieved the highest ranking among Ghanaian universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for the SDG-3 category, recognizing their outstanding efforts in promoting good health and well-being in the 2022. [31]

Volta Region is one of Ghana's sixteen administrative regions, with Ho designated as its capital. It is located west of Republic of Togo and to the east of Lake Volta. Divided into 25 administrative districts, the region is multi-ethnic and multilingual, including groups such as the Ewe, the Guan, and the Akan peoples. The Guan peoples include the Lolobi, Likpe, Akpafu, Buem,Nyangbo,Avatime, and Nkonya. This region was carved out of the Volta Region in December 2018 by the New Patriotic Party. The people of the Volta Region are popularly known as Ewes. The people of the Volta Region are popular known for their rich cultural display and music some of which include Agbadza, Borborbor and Zigi.
The University of Ibadan (UI) is a public research university in Ibadan, Nigeria. The university was once a college of the University of London. The college was established in 1948 as University College Ibadan, one of many colleges within the University of London. It became an independent university in 1962 and is the oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria. Through its graduate network, the University of Ibadan has contributed to the political, industrial, economic and cultural development of Nigeria.
The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is a public collegiate university located in the historic town of Cape Coast in the central region of Ghana. The campus has a rare seafront and sits on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It operates on two campuses: the Southern Campus and the Northern Campus. Two of the most important historical sites in Ghana, Elmina and Cape Coast Castle, are a few kilometers away from its campus.
The University for Development Studies, Tamale was established in 1992 as a multi-campus institution. It is the fifth public university to be established in Ghana. This deviates from the usual practice of having universities with central campuses and administrations. It was created with the four northern regions of the country in mind. These are the Brong Ahafo Region, Northern Region, Upper East Region and the Upper West Region.
The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) is a public university located at Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana.
The Pentecost University is a private university located at Sowutuom in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It was founded by The Church of Pentecost (COP) and evolved from The Pentecost Bible College which initially trained only Lay Leaders and full-time Ministers for the COP. On May 22, 2003, J. A. Kufuor, the former President of Ghana, inaugurated PUC at the Sowutuom campus. The first PUC Council was inducted on May 6, 2004. Pentvars was accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB), Ghana in November 2004 and awarded its Presidential Charter on May 28, 2020, by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the President of the Republic of Ghana. Prior to receiving a Presidential Charter, the university was affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, and University of Ghana. On June 1, 2020, the university announced the appointment of Rev. Prof. Kwabena Agyapong-Kodua, who replaces Apostle Daniel Okyere Walker, as the first Vice-Chancellor since the university became fully-fledged.
The College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology comprises the Faculties of Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Medical Sciences, School of Dentistry, School of Veterinary Medicine and the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in tropical medicine (KCCR). It attained the status of a college by a change in the University Statutes that came into being in January 2005. Prior to this time, the components of the college existed separately as the Faculty of Pharmacy and School of Medical Sciences.
Kwasi Kwarfo Adarkwa is a Ghanaian academic and the a past Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). In 2008, he was selected by then President of Ghana, John Kufuor, for a national award in the field of academics.
The University of Ghana Medical School also UGMS is the medical school of Ghana's first public research institution, the University of Ghana. It is currently located at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. The medical school was first planned in 1919, but took its first students in 1962.
Ebenezer Oduro Owusu is a Ghanaian entomologist and university administrator who served as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2021. In this role, he was the principal academic and administrative officer of the university. Owusu is a professor of entomology at the Department of Animal Biology and Conservation Science and prior to his appointment as vice-chancellor, he was the provost of the College of Basic and Applied Sciences at the University of Ghana. He is the current President of the Presbyterian University College.
Professor John Owusu Gyapong is a Ghanaian Professor of Epidemiology. He was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho Ghana from 2016 to 2022.
Samuel Nii Odai is a Ghanaian professor of Hydraulics and Water Resources, and a serving Vice Chancellor of Accra Technical University. He is a Commonwealth Academic Fellow, and a recipient of the National Best Research Scientist Gold Award for water, environment and sanitation.
Ellis Owusu-Dabo is a Ghanaian academic and pro-vice-chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Nana Aba Appiah Amfo is a Ghanaian linguist, university administrator and the current Vice-chancellor at the University of Ghana. Until her appointment, she was the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Students Affairs at the University of Ghana in West Africa.
Bill Buenar Puplampu is a Ghanaian academic, occupational psychologist and the current Vice Chancellor of the Central University.
Lydia Aziato is a Ghanaian administrator, Dean at School of Nursing and Midwifery and lecturer at University of Ghana.
Fred Newton Binka is a public health physician and researcher from Ghana. He serves as a distinguished professor of clinical epidemiology at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho, Ghana, and has previously coordinated the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Response to Artemisinin Resistance in the Greater Mekong sub-region of Asia. He is the founding vice-chancellor of UHAS and the former executive secretary of the INDEPTH Network, a global network of health and demographic surveillance systems. His work in malaria control and health development in Africa, particularly in the areas of vitamin A supplementation, insecticide-treated bed nets, and rotavirus and meningitis vaccination, has been impactful.
Atinuke Olusola Adebanji is a Nigerian academic. She is the first female professor of statistics in Ghana and the founding head of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
