"Welding" Kumar was an Indian criminal from Chennai, who gained infamy for an attack on a lawyer for which he was sentenced to life in prison. He was later killed in Puzhal Prison during a fight with other inmates. [1]

Personal life

He was born in Navalar Street near to Korukkupettai in Chennai. He was originally known as Jeyakumar. [2] He was believed to be about 47 to 48 years old when he died. He started his profession as a welder in Tondiarpet . [3] He was married to Shanthi and has a daughter named Divya and a son named Sushil kumar. [4]

Criminal history

He was accused in 25 different criminal cases including four murders. Deccan Chronicle described his as the henchman of some Tamil Nadu politicians. [5] [6]

He was accused of killing Radhakrishnan in 1985 and Lambamani in 1992. He has attacked Chera inside the court complexes and Veeramani from Ayodhya kuppam. He was involved in attack against lawyer Vijayan on his way to court. He received life imprisonment for attack against Radhakrishnan and Shanmugasundaram. He resorted to violence even when he was in prison. He attacked John Pandian when he was in Cuddalore jail and V. Mullaivendhan when in Salem jail. [2] [7]

Advocate Shanmugasundaram case

He achieved notoriety in Tamil Nadu after the attack on lawyer R. Shanmugasundaram which happened on 30 May 1995. "Welding" Kumar became a household name when the CBI offered Rs. 3000 for information leading to his arrest. The DMK lawyer R. Shanmugasundaram was preparing a case against the then Chief Minister Jayalalitha in the TANSI land scam case. The attack which left him severely injured infuriated the law community in Tamil Nadu and evoked statewide protests. Kumar was subsequently convicted in that case by a local court and sent to life in prison. The ruling was later confirmed by the High court. [3] [8] [9]

Death

On 10 June 2009, Kumar was attacked and killed by fellow inmates in Puzhal prison. He had been transferred from Coimbatore to Puzhal prison two months before his murder. Puzhal prison officials said that his murder was a result of the hostility created by his taking over of the prison racket in which "well to do" remand prisoners deposited their mobile phones with convicts for a fee. He was a Member of the Parliament of India for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party representing Tamil Nadu in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. He also has experience as a public prosecutor when he worked from 1996-2001 as the Public Prosecutor of Tamil Nadu. He was attacked on May 30, 1995 when he was going to file a corruption case against Jayalalitha."Welding" Kumar and 6 others were convicted for the attack.

The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India, occurred as a result of a suicide bombing in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, India on 21 May 1991. At least 14 others, in addition to Rajiv Gandhi, were killed. It was carried out by Kalaivani Rajaratnam, a member of the Sri Lankan Tamil separatist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) along with Jagjit Singh Chohan of the National Council of Khalistan (NCK) and Gurjant Singh Budhsinghwala of the Khalistan Liberation Force. At the time, India had just ended its involvement, through the Indian Peace Keeping Force, in the Sri Lankan Civil War. Subsequent accusations of conspiracy have been addressed by two commissions of inquiry and have brought down at least one national government, the government of Inder Kumar Gujral.

A. G. Perarivalan was a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. He was on life imprisonment along with Murugan and Santhan who were other two convicts of the same case. The Supreme Court ordered the release of Perarivalan on 18 May 2022 after he spent over 30 years in jail.

The 2013 Marakkanam violence was an incident of violence in Tamil Nadu between Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Dalit villagers in Marakkanam. The violence was instigated when drunk PMK cadres attacked Dalit villagers. The Dalit villagers blocked the road demanding their attackers be arrested which stopped the vehicle convoy taking PMK members to a youth festival organized by the Vanniyar Sangam at Mamallapuram. The PMK members attacked the Dalit colony and burned down nine huts of Dalits, they attacked homes of Muslims and offices of AIADMK MPs, they vandalized buses, felled trees among other things. In the ensuing violence, two PMK members were killed.

Mohammed Nisham A A is businessman and convicted criminal, notable for the K Chandrabose murder case and is currently lodged in a prison in Kerala, India after he was convicted. He is from Muttichoor, a town near Padiyam and the Kurumali River in Thrissur district in Kerala. Nisham is primarily into tobacco and real estate businesses. He is the managing partner of Kings Beedi Co., based in Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, a company founded by his late father, Adakkaparambil B Abdulkader. Apart from being a prominent tobacco supplier, he has hotel and jewellery businesses in the Middle East.

M. Jaishankar, nicknamed Psycho Shankar, was an Indian criminal, sexual predator, and serial killer, notorious for a series of rapes and murders during 2008–2011. It is believed that he was involved in about 30 rapes, murders, and robbery cases across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. At the time of his death, he had been accused of murdering at least 19 women.

S. Swathi was a 24-year-old Indian Infosys employee who was murdered on June 24, 2016, at the Nungambakkam railway station in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India while on her way to her office. Swathi was murdered in front of several people, with passengers remaining mute spectators, an assailant, suspected to be Ramkumar's, escaped, and Swathi's body lay unattended before the police arrived and started their investigation process.

Mandabam is a 2010 Indian Tamil-language action film directed by R. Senthamil Arasu. The film stars S. T. Tamilarasan and Siniya, with Nizhalgal Ravi, Shanmugasundaram, O. A. K. Sundar, Vadivukkarasi, Srinivasan and Gowthami Vembunathan playing supporting roles. The film, produced by S. T. Tamilarasan, had musical score by Iniya Mahesan and was released on 29 October 2010.
