The 1300th Anniversary of the Bulgarian State was a yearlong celebration in 1981 when Bulgaria celebrated the 1300th anniversary of the establishment of the first Bulgarian state in modern history. [1] [2] [3] There were 23,000 events connected with the 1300th anniversary. [4]

Background

The 1300th Anniversary of the Bulgarian State celebration was the brainchild of Lyudmila Zhivkova, and was modeled after the Millennium of the Polish State celebrations in 1966, the United States Bicentennial in 1976, and the 2,500-year celebration of the Persian Empire in 1971. [5]

The military parade

The parade took place on Sofia's September 9th Square. The parade inspector was the Minister of People's Defence of Bulgaria, General of the Army Dobri Dzhurov. [9] The parade commander was Colonel General Hristo Dobrev, the Commander of the Land Forces of the Bulgarian People's Army. [10] Attending the parade was the General Secretary of the Bulgarian Communist Party Todor Zhivkov.

Commemorative coins and awards

At least 20 commemorative coins were made in 1981 honoring the anniversary. An award, the Order "13 Centuries of Bulgaria", [11] and a medal, Medal "1300th Anniversary of Bulgaria" were issued on October 16, 1981 in honor of the anniversary. [12]

The People's Republic of Bulgaria, was the official name of Bulgaria when it was a socialist republic from 1946 to 1990, ruled by the Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP) together with its coalition partner, the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union. Bulgaria was closely allied and one of the most loyal satellite states of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, sometimes being called the 16th Soviet Republic rather than an independent country. Bulgaria was also part of Comecon as well as a member of the Warsaw Pact. The Bulgarian resistance movement during World War II deposed the Kingdom of Bulgaria administration in the Bulgarian coup d'état of 1944 which ended the country's alliance with the Axis powers and led to the People's Republic in 1946.

Georgi Dzhagarov was a Bulgarian playwright, poet, politician, and former chairman of the Bulgarian Writers Association. He also served as vice-president of the Bulgarian State Council for eighteen years.

Georgi Ivanov Atanasov was a Bulgarian politician and a leading member of the Bulgarian Communist Party who served as Prime Minister from 1986 to 1990. Atanasov supported the move to oust Todor Zhivkov as Chairman of the State Council, joining Petar Mladenov in leading the opposition. In November 1992, he was sentenced to ten years imprisonment for embezzlement, although he was pardoned in 1994.

Georgi (Grisha) Stanchev Filipov was a leading member of the Bulgarian Communist Party.

Lyudmila Todorova Zhivkova was a senior Bulgarian Communist Party functionary and Politburo member. She was the daughter of Bulgarian Communist leader Todor Zhivkov, and primarily known for her interest in preserving and promoting Bulgarian arts and culture on the international stage. Zhivkova was also a controversial figure within the former Soviet Bloc because of her interests in esoteric Eastern religion and spirituality.

Prince Alexander I Square, often called simply Battenberg Square is the largest square of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is named after Alexander Joseph of Battenberg, the first prince of modern Bulgaria. During the Communist rule of Bulgaria, the square was named September 9thSquare, after a coup on September 9, 1944, made the country a Communist state. Before 1944, the square was known as Tsar's Square because the former royal palace, now the National Art Gallery was located there. It was the site of the Georgi Dimitrov Mausoleum from 1949 until 1999. It is arguably the most suitable place in Sofia for major open-air concerts such as the concert series "Opera on the Square", demonstrations, parades and other large-scale events.

The Hero of the People's Republic of Bulgaria was awarded to Bulgarian and foreign citizens for merits in defending Bulgaria and other countries allied to Bulgaria. Individuals who were named Hero of the People's Republic of Bulgaria were also awarded the Order of Georgi Dimitrov, Bulgaria's highest award at the time.

Major general Yordan Sergiev Milanov was a major general of the Bulgarian Air Force. He was a recognized author, Bulgarian Aviation and Aerospace Doctor of Science, and a Bulgarian Air Force pilot. With over 60 publications regarding Air- and Space- Force history, tactics, and geopolitical issues, Maj. Gen. Milanov was one of Bulgaria's most prolific 20th century military aviation leaders. Maj. Gen. Milanov died of natural causes in the early morning hours of June 27, 2020, in his home in Sofia, Bulgaria.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bulgarian People's Army</span> Army of the Peoples Republic of Bulgaria

The Bulgarian People's Army was the army of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. It comprised the Bulgarian Land Forces, Air Force and Air Defence, Navy and supporting arms. Bulgaria was one of the signatories of the Warsaw Pact. Along with troops from other Warsaw Pact countries, the BNA participated in the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. However, other than this, the BNA did not see any combat during its existence. The Bulgarian People's Army was dissolved along with the People's Republic of Bulgaria in 1990 and was succeeded by the Bulgarian Armed Forces.

Bulgarian Armed Forces Day, also known as the Day of Bravery or the Day of Bravery and Holiday of the Bulgarian Army is a national holiday celebrated annually on May 6, commemorating the Bulgarian Armed Forces. The event is marked by military parades, fireworks and ceremonies across the country. As Armed Forces Day is the national military holiday of Bulgaria the celebrations in Sofia thus serve as a national event to mark the holiday.

Colonel General Hristo "Dico" Dobrev Stoyanov was a Bulgarian politician, partisan and military leader. He was the last Chief of the General Staff of the Bulgarian People's Army. He was a candidate member (1966–71) and member of the Central Committee of the BKP (1971–89).

Alekso Martulkov, born as Aleksandar Onchev Martulkov, was a publicist and one of the first socialist revolutionaries from the region of Macedonia. He was a member of the Bulgarian Workers' Social Democratic Party and later the People's Federative Party and the Bulgarian Communist Party. Simultaneously, he was a member of the IMRO and subsequently the IMRO (United). He advocated for the independence of Macedonia. Martulkov was also a member of the Bulgarian Parliament, as well as the Presidium of ASNOM and the parliament of SR Macedonia. He is considered a Macedonian in the Macedonian historiography and a Bulgarian in the Bulgarian historiography.
