First established in 1980 as The Learning Channel, it initially focused on educational and instructional programming. By the late 1990s, after an acquisition by Discovery, Inc. earlier in the decade, the network began to pivot towards reality television programming — predominantly focusing on programming involving lifestyles and personal stories — to the point that the previous name with "The Learning Channel" spelled out was phased out in favor of its initialism.

The 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships were a Paralympic track and field meet organized by the World Para Athletics subcommittee of the International Paralympic Committee. The event was the 7th edition of what is now known as the World Para Athletics Championships, held from 21 to 31 October 2015 at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Qatar. It featured 119 men's events and 91 women's events. The Marathon events which are traditionally part of the world championships were separated from the competition and instead held on 26 April as part of the London Marathon.

This was followed by 16 Kids and Counting, exclusively about the Radfords, which aired after they welcomed another child. Subsequent annual or biennial updates focused on successive years with further pregnancies by the Radford matriarch, each increasing the count. Upon the programme 22 Kids and Counting, the format changed along with the couple's decision not to have more children of their own. 22 Kids and Counting started airing on 9 January 2023 on Channel 5 and became a multi-part, multi-season series under the same title, accompanied by a social media presence.
