The 1934 Walker Cup, the 8th Walker Cup Match, was played on 11 and 12 May 1934, on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland. The United States won by 9 matches to 2 with one match halved. The United States won three foursomes matches and six of the singles matches. [1] [2] [3]

Format

Four 36-hole matches of foursomes were played on Friday and eight singles matches on Saturday. Each of the 12 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 36th hole extra holes were not played. The team with most points won the competition. If the two teams were tied, the previous winner would retain the trophy.

Teams

The United States picked a 9-man team in early January, including Francis Ouimet as playing-captain. [4] Great Britain and Ireland announced 8 of their 10-man team in mid-March with Michael Scott as playing-captain. [5] Eric McRuvie and Lionel Munn were later added. [6] Munn, from Northern Ireland, travelled to St Andrews but suffered from sciatica, withdrawing two days before the match. He was replaced by Leonard Crawley. [7]

The Walker Cup is a golf trophy contested in odd-numbered years by leading male amateur golfers in two teams: United States, and Great Britain and Ireland. The official name is the Walker Cup Match. It is organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA). In 1921 the Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted an unofficial contest which was followed by official annual contests from 1922 through 1924. From 1925 they became biennial, held on even-number years. After World War II they switched to odd-numbered years. They are held alternately in the U.S., and Ireland or Britain.

Ted Ray (golfer)

Edward Rivers John "Ted" Ray was a British professional golfer, one of the leading players of the first quarter of the 20th century. He won two major championships, the Open Championship in 1912 and the U.S. Open in 1920, and contended in many others. He was captain of the British team in the inaugural Ryder Cup, in 1927.

The 1923 Walker Cup, the second Walker Cup Match, was a team golf match played on 18 and 19 May 1923 on the Old Course at St Andrews in Fife, Scotland. The United States won 6 to 5, with one match halved.

The England–Scotland Amateur Match was an annual men's amateur golf competition between teams representing England and Scotland. It was played from 1902 to 1931, although the match lapsed between 1913 and 1921. The match continued after 1931 but as part of the Men's Home Internationals in which Ireland and Wales also competed. Until 1931 it was played in connection with the Amateur Championship, on the Saturday either before or after the championship.

The 1975 Walker Cup, the 25th Walker Cup Match, was played on 28 and 29 May 1975, on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland. The event was won by the United States 15½ to 8½.

The 1971 Walker Cup, the 23rd Walker Cup Match, was played on 26 and 27 May 1971, on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland. The event was won by Great Britain & Ireland 13 to 11, their first win in the event since 1938.

The 1967 Walker Cup, the 21st Walker Cup Match, was played on 19 and 20 May 1967, at Royal St George's Golf Club, Sandwich, Kent, England. The event was won by the United States 13 to 7 with 4 matches halved.

The 1965 Walker Cup, the 20th Walker Cup Match, was played on September 3 and 4, 1965, at Baltimore Country Club, Baltimore, Maryland. The event was tied at 11 matches each with 2 matches halved.

The 1963 Walker Cup, the 19th Walker Cup Match, was played on 24 and 25 May 1963, at Turnberry, Ayrshire, Scotland. The event was won by the United States 12 to 8 with 4 matches halved. This was the first Walker Cup in which 18-hole matches were played.

The 1959 Walker Cup, the 17th Walker Cup Match, was played on 15 and 16 May 1959, at Muirfield, Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. The United States won by 9 matches to 3. The United States won all four of the foursomes matches on the first day. Although Great Britain and Ireland won three of the singles matches on the second day, it was a comfortable win for the United States.

The 1955 Walker Cup, the 15th Walker Cup Match, was played on 20 and 21 May 1955, on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland. The United States won by 10 matches to 2.

The 1951 Walker Cup, the 13th Walker Cup Match, was played on 11 and 12 May 1951, at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, Southport, Lancashire, England. The United States won by 6 matches to 3 with 3 matches halved.

Elsie Alice Corlett was an English amateur golfer. She reached the final of the Womens Amateur Championship in 1938 and was a semi-finalist in 1934 and 1937. She won the English Women's Amateur Championship in 1938 was the losing finalist in 1926 and 1935. She played in the 1932 and 1938 Curtis Cup matches and was the non-playing captain in the 1964 event.
