The 1940 Greek Cup final was the 4th final of the Greek Cup. The match took place on 2 June 1940 at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium. The contesting teams were Panathinaikos and Aris. It was Panathinaikos' first ever Greek Cup final in their 32 years of existence and Aris' third Greek Cup final in their 26-year history. [1]

This was the third Greek Cup final held at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium, after the 1932 and 1939 finals. (Leoforos also hosted the replay match of the 1933 final between Ethnikos Piraeus and Aris).

Leoforos Alexandras Stadium was built in 1922. The stadium is used as a venue for Panathinaikos and Greece. Its current capacity is 30,000. [2]

Panathinaikos had never competed in a Cup final.

Aris had reached the Greek Cup final two times. The last time that had played in a final was in 1933, where they had lost to Ethnikos Piraeus by 2–1 in a replay match, after the 2–2 of the initial match.

The two teams had never met each other in a Cup final. [3]

The 1932–33 Greek Football Cup was the second edition of the Greek Football Cup contested by 19 teams. AEK Athens unsuccessfully defended their 1932 title losing to Ethnikos Piraeus in the knock out second round. Aris would unsuccessfully defend their tournament winning streak, losing by 2–1 to Ethnikos Piraeus in the final replay on March 5, at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium against Aris.

The 1933 Greek Cup final was the 2nd final of the Greek Cup. The initial match took place on 5 February 1933 at Aris Stadium. The replay match took place on 25 March 1933 at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium. The contesting teams were Aris and Ethnikos Piraeus. It was Aris' second Greek Cup final in their 19 years of existence and Ethnikos Piraeus' first ever Greek Cup final in their 10-year history. The HFF, intending for maximum incomes, initially scheduled the match at Leoforos Alexandras Stadium, which was the largest stadium of the country at the time, but Aris requested for the match to be played at their home ground, as the proclamation dictated. Eventually a draw for the venue of the match took place, which selected Aris Stadium. After the end of the tournament, the HFF temporarily suspended the institution "until it became possible to get it better organized".
