In 1942 under German occupation most pre-war Latvian football clubs were restored (with the exception of ethnic minorities' sides like RKSB Riga, Hakoah Riga etc.). The championship was divided in two phases - the preliminary phase to determine the four strongest sides in Riga and two in the province, and the main phase where these six teams would settle among them positions in the Latvian Higher League.
The four clubs to finish at the top of the Riga tournament were (from first to fourth) Daugavieši, RSK Riga (later in the year renamed back to ASK Riga), LDzB Riga and RFK. From the province an automatic qualification was granted to Olimpija Liepāja, whilst Jelgavas Sporta biedrība took the second spot.
Three sides were considered main contenders for the league title - Daugavieši, ASK and Olimpija, whilst RFK had an outside chance for it. After the first two match days results corresponded to the pre-season predictions: Daugavieši and ASK were on top of the table with 3 points, thus showing their ambitions to win the league. However, in the following three match days their results went in opposite directions - ASK got 3 victories, meanwhile Daugavieši suffered three defeats. The collapse of the Riga qualification tournament winners was mainly connected with loss of several key players during the season and before it. Alfons Jēgers, one of the most talented Latvian forwards of the 1940s, was arrested by the German officials and sent to a concentration camp, another key forward Ludvigs Putniņš decided to return to his previous club - ASK, several players suffered injuries and a result of it all Daugavieši finished last in the league and had to participate in a play-off match against Rīgas Vilki for the right to play in the higher league in the following season. By losing that game also, Daugavieši faced relegation.
Meanwhile, in the title race there was no competition for ASK Riga which won four out of five league games.

Latvian Higher League or Virslīga is a professional football league and the top tier of association football in Latvia. Organised by the Latvian Football Federation, the Higher League is contested by 10 clubs. The full name of the league is Optibet Virslīga for sponsorship reasons since 2019.
Skonto FC was a Latvian football club, founded in 1991. The club played at the Skonto Stadium in Riga. Skonto won the Virsliga in the first 14 seasons of the league's resumption, and often provided the core of the Latvia national football team. With those 14 national championships in a row, they set a European record, men and women's football combined, until the women of Faroese club KÍ Klaksvík won their 14th championship in a row in 2013.
Ēriks Pētersons was Latvian footballer and hockey player. Between 1929 and 1939 he played 63 international matches and scored 21 goals for Latvia national team. He also played in Latvian national ice hockey team, where he appeared in eight matches. After World War II Pētersons moved to United States.
Riga FK was a Latvian football club which was founded December 14, 1923. It was the strongest and most popular Latvian football club in 1920s and 1930s, it was also the base team for Latvia national football team in its early years. It was closed after World War II.

The 1931 football season was the 5th season of the Latvian Virsliga. The reigning champions - Rīgas FK managed to retain their title in a tight battle against Olimpija Liepāja. The title was decided in the last match between Rīgas FK and LSB Rīga in which the former won 4-0, if Rīgas FK wouldn't have won there would have been either a golden match or Olimpija would be crowned champions. Rīgas FK had previously fallen behind in the title race after an unexpected defeat against Cēsu sporta biedrība however Olimpija also struggled in the latter part of the season. The Cēsis club which was the league debutant was relegated after having lost 12 of its 14 matches in Virsliga, and the win against the champion club Rīgas FK was its only victory of the season. Moreover, as of 2008, it was the only season for a club from Cēsis to play in the Latvian top football league.
Aleksandrs Stankus was a Latvian footballer who played for Olimpija Liepāja and Latvia national team between 1930 and 1937.
Eduards Freimanis was a former Latvian football forward, the first Latvian footballer to play with a professional club in England.
Edvīns Bārda was a Latvian footballer and manager, the elder and most popular of four football playing Bārda brothers.
Fricis Kaņeps was a Latvian footballer. He was one of the most powerful Latvian forwards of the 1930s who didn't have a very good technique but compensated it mostly by his physical strength. In earlier years when still playing in Ventspils Kaņeps also played in defence.
Karlis Arvīds Jurgens was a Latvian footballer, ice hockey, basketball and bandy player who play played for Latvia national teams in all four of these sports. He was one of the best all-around Latvian sportsmen.
Riga Vanderer was a Latvian football club that was founded in 1927, disbanded in 1940, restored a year later and disbanded again in 1944.

However, their appeals against this were successful and the league was restored to ten clubs.
The 2017 Latvian Higher League is the 26th season of top-tier football in Latvia. Spartaks Jūrmala are the defending champions, having won their first title in the previous season.
