The 1963–64 Liga Bet season saw Hapoel Safed, Hapoel Netanya, Beitar Lod and Hapoel Ashkelon win their regional divisions and promoted to Liga Alef.

Second placed clubs, Beitar Haifa, Hapoel Ra'anana, Beitar Harari Tel Aviv and Maccabi Holon were also promoted, as Liga Alef expanded to 16 clubs in each division. also, as there was an odd number of clubs for next season Liga Alef (15 teams competed in Liga Leumit), another promotion spot given to the best third placed club (rather than promotion playoffs), which was Hapoel Bnei Nazareth.

Liga Alef is the third tier of the Israeli football league system. It is divided into two regional divisions, north and south.

The 1954–55 Liga Alef season was the last in which it was the Israel's top football league, as the following season it was replaced by Liga Leumit and became the country's second tier. It consisted of 14 clubs, the 12 from the top division in the previous season and two promoted clubs. It used two points for a win and one for a draw.

The 1955–56 Liga Alef season was the first in which Liga Alef was the second tier of Israeli football due to the formation of Liga Leumit, and was the first nationwide second tier season.

The 1968–69 Liga Bet season saw Beitar Kiryat Tiv'on, Hapoel Tirat HaCarmel, Hapoel Bat Yam and Hapoel Eilat win their regional divisions and promoted to Liga Alef.

The 1973–74 Liga Bet season saw Hapoel Beit She'an, Maccabi Hadera, Beitar Jaffa and Hapoel Ashkelon win their regional divisions and qualify with the second-placed clubs, Beitar Tiberias, Hapoel Mahane Yehuda, Hapoel Kfar Shalem and Maccabi Yavne for promotion play-offs against the bottom two clubs of both North and South divisions in Liga Alef. Maccabi Hadera and Beitar Jaffa were the only Liga Bet clubs who achieved promotion to Liga Alef.

The 1980–81 Liga Alef season saw Beitar Netanya and Maccabi Kiryat Gat win the title and promotion to Liga Artzit. Hapoel Tel Hanan also promoted after promotion play-offs.

The 1986–87 Liga Artzit season saw Tzafririm Holon win the title and promotion to Liga Leumit.

The 2012–13 Liga Alef season saw Hapoel Afula and Hapoel Katamon win the title and promotion to Liga Leumit. Beitar Kfar Saba won the promotion play-offs and met Beitar Tel Aviv Ramla of Liga Leumit and lost 2–4 on aggregate and thus remained in Liga Alef.

The 1958–59 Liga Bet season saw Hapoel Tiberias and Hapoel Ramla promoted to Liga Alef as the respective winners of the north and south divisions. They were joined by runners-up, Hapoel Netanya and Hapoel Be'er Sheva, which were promoted after promotion play-offs.

The 2006–07 Liga Alef season saw Hapoel Bnei Jadeidi and Hapoel Maxim Lod winning the title and promotion to Liga Artzit. However as Hapoel Maxim Lod folded during the following summer, eventually second placed Hapoel Kfar Shalem was promoted instead.

The 2007–08 Liga Alef season saw Hapoel Umm al-Fahm and Maccabi Ironi Bat Yam winning the title and promotion to Liga Artzit.

The 2008–09 Liga Alef season was the last season of Liga Alef as the fourth tier of the Israeli football league system. Third tier, Liga Artzit, was scrapped, while the Premier League and Liga Leumit were expanded to 16 clubs each, making Liga Alef the third tier, as well as expanding the two regional divisions to 16 clubs.

The 2006–07 Liga Bet season saw Beitar Ihud Mashhad, Ironi Sayid Umm al-Fahm, Maccabi Ironi Kfar Yona and Maccabi Ironi Netivot winning the title and promotion to Liga Alef.

The 2007–08 Liga Bet season saw Ahva Arraba, Maccabi Kafr Qara, Hapoel Hadera and Hapoel Masos/Segev Shalom winning the title and promotion to Liga Alef.

The 2004–05 Liga Alef season saw Maccabi Tzur Shalom and Hapoel Bnei Lod winning the title and promotion to 2005–06.

The 2005–06 Liga Alef season saw Hapoel Bnei Tamra and Sektzia Nes Tziona winning the title and promotion to 2006–07.

The 1965–66 Liga Gimel season saw 175 clubs competing in 14 regional divisions for promotion to Liga Bet.

The 2004–05 Liga Bet season saw Maccabi Sektzia Ma'alot, Hapoel Bnei Tamra, Maccabi Ironi Bat Yam and Hapoel Arad win their regional divisions and promoted to Liga Alef.

The 2005–06 Liga Bet season saw Beitar Safed, Hapoel Ahva Haifa, Maccabi Amishav Petah Tikva and Hapoel Maxim Lod win their regional divisions and promoted to Liga Alef.
