Defending champions Cincinnati defeated Georgia Tech in the championship game, 74–61, to win their second Metro men's basketball tournament.

The Bearcats, in turn, received a bid to the 1976 NCAA Tournament. They were joined by fellow Metro member, and tournament runner-up, Louisville, who earned an at-large bid.

Format

All seven of the conference's members participated in the tournament field, including new member Florida State. They were seeded based on regular season conference records, with the top team earning a bye into the semifinal round. The other six teams entered into the preliminary first round.

The Bearcats were led by head coach Gale Catlett, as members of the Metro Conference. They finished the season 25–5, 4–2 in Metro play, finishing in second place. They defeated St. Louis, Memphis State, and Georgia Tech to win the Metro tournament for the second consecutive year, and received the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They lost 66–51 to national champions Marquette.

They finished the season 23–8, 12–2 in conference play. They won the ECAC Metro tournament to earn the conference's automatic bid to the 1983 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. They earned one of two 12 seeds in the Mideast Region and defeated Georgia Southern in the play-in game, avenging an early season loss to the Eagles. The Colonials were then beaten 55–53 by Purdue in the first round.
