The 1979–80 season was the 42nd season in the history of Wigan Athletic F.C. and their second as a professional club in the Football League.
Wigan Athletic Football Club is a professional football club in Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, which competes in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.
The club finished the season in 6th place.
In the FA Cup, the club achieved an away victory against Second Division side Chelsea, reaching the Fourth Round for the first time in their history before being knocked out by Everton. The club did not progress beyond the first round in the League Cup. Peter Houghton was the team's top goalscorer with a total of 15 league goals (16 in all competitions). Goalkeeper John Brown won the club's Player of the Year award.

Contested by 16 clubs, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation with the Belgian First Division B. Seasons run from late July to early May, with teams playing 30 matches each in the regular season, and then entering play-offs 1 or play-offs 2 according to their position in the regular season. Play-offs 1 are contested by the top 6 clubs in the regular season, with each club playing each other twice. Play-offs 2 are contested by teams ranked 7 to 15 in the regular season, divided in two groups of 6 teams playing each other twice. The team finishing in 16th place is relegated. As of 2014 the league was sponsored by AB InBev, brewers of Jupiler beer, and officially known as Jupiler Pro League.

Walthamstow Avenue Football Club is an English football club based in Walthamstow in London. Formerly Based at Green Pond Road, they played in dark and light blue hooped shirts, and light blue shorts. The club was established in 1900, and were one of the most successful amateur clubs in the country during the 1950s. The club ceased to exist in 1988 when it merged into Leytonstone/Ilford, who later became Redbridge Forest and merged with Dagenham to form Dagenham and Redbridge. They have since been revived as an amateur football club, currently playing in the Sunday Essex Corinthian League.

Gateshead United Football Club was a football club based in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. The club was established in South Shields in 1936 as a replacement for the club that had relocated to Gateshead in 1930. Like their predecessor, the club was also relocated to Gateshead in 1974 after the former club went bust. Renamed Gateshead United, they folded three years later.
