Michael Chang defeated Stefan Edberg in the final, 6–1, 3–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2, to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1989 French Open. Chang became the youngest-ever major men's singles champion, winning the final at the age of 17 years, 3 months and 20 days. En route to the title, he defeated the world No. 1 and three-time champion Ivan Lendl, which is remembered as one of the most significant matches in French Open history.
Pete Sampras defeated Jim Courier in the final, 7–6(7–3), 7–6(8–6), 3–6, 6–3 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1993 Wimbledon Championships. This was the first of Sampras's eventual seven Wimbledon titles, an all-time record shared with William Renshaw until 2017 when Roger Federer won his eighth title.
