The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year. In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam".

Harold Segerson Mahony was a Scottish-born Irish tennis player who is best known for winning the singles title at the Wimbledon Championships in 1896. His career lasted from 1888 until his death in 1905. Mahony was born in Scotland but lived in Ireland for the majority of his life; his family were Irish including both of his parents, the family home was in County Kerry, Southwestern Ireland. He was the last Scottish born man to win Wimbledon until the victory of Andy Murray at the 2013 championships.

Defending champion John McEnroe defeated Jimmy Connors in the final, 6–1, 6–1, 6–2 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships. It was his third Wimbledon and sixth major singles title overall. The final was for a long time referred to as the greatest display in the history of tennis; it lasted only 80 minutes and McEnroe made just four unforced errors during the entire match.

Peter Leslie Doohan was an Australian tennis player who won three consecutive Australian Hard Court Championships singles titles, which remains an Open era record for that tournament. He won a further two singles titles at the South Australian Open in 1984 and San Louis Potosí tournament in Mexico in 1988. He also won five doubles titles during his career. The right-hander reached his highest Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) singles ranking of world No. 43 in August 1987.

The 1981 Wimbledon Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tennis tournaments at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were staged at the All England Club in Wimbledon, from 28 July to 5 August. This was the first Olympic grass court tournament since tennis was reintroduced as an Olympic sport and the first to be held at a Grand Slam venue in the Open era. Two other 2012 Summer Olympic bid finalists had also offered Grand Slam venues. Second-place finisher Paris offered the French Open venue, the Stade Roland Garros, which later was also included in their successful 2024 bid. Meanwhile, fourth-place finisher New York City offered the US Open venue, the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, Queens.

Rafael Nadal defeated the five-time defending champion Roger Federer in the final, 6–4, 6–4, 6–7(5–7), 6–7(8–10), 9–7 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships. It was his fifth major title, and his first outside of the French Open. It was also the first time Federer lost a major final outside the French Open. It would be Federer's only loss at Wimbledon between 2003 and 2009. The final marked the third of three consecutive Wimbledon finals contested by Federer and Nadal, with Federer emerging victorious in the two prior encounters. It was the second-longest championship match in Wimbledon history with play lasting 4 hours and 48 minutes, and with two rain delays. Mark Kratzmann defeated Stefan Kruger in the final, 6–4, 4–6, 6–3 to win the boys' singles tennis title at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships.

Annabel Croft defeated Elna Reinach in the final, 3–6, 6–3, 6–2 to win the girls' singles tennis title at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships.

Mark Kratzmann and Simon Youl were the defending champions but Youl did not compete.

Caroline Kuhlman and Stephanie Rehe defeated Viktoria Milvidskaia and Larisa Savchenko in the final, 6–3, 5–7, 6–4 to win the girls' doubles tennis title at the 1984 Wimbledon Championships.
