John Patrick McEnroe Jr. is an American retired tennis player. He was known for his shot-making artistry and volleying skills, and for confrontational on-court behavior that frequently landed him in trouble with umpires and tennis authorities.
McEnroe successfully defended his title, defeating Anders Järryd 6–1, 6–2 in the final.
Anders Per Järryd is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. During his career he won eight Grand Slam doubles titles, reached the World No. 1 doubles ranking, and achieved a career-high singles ranking of World No. 5.

John McEnroe defeated Ivan Lendl in the final 6–3, 6–4, 6–1, to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1984 US Open. Jimmy Connors was the defending champion, but he was defeated by his rival McEnroe in the semifinals, in what would be the last match between the two players in a Grand Slam singles tournament.
