Third-seeded Mats Wilander defeated Pat Cash 6–3, 6–7(3–7), 3–6, 6–1, 8–6 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the 1988 Australian Open. Stefan Edberg was the two-time defending champion, but lost in the semifinals to Wilander.
