The 1986 Virginia Slims of Washington, also known as the VS of Washington, was a women's tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts at the GWU Charles Smith Center in Washington, D.C. in the United States that was part of the 1985 Virginia Slims World Championship Series ^{[lower-alpha 1]}. It was the 15th edition of the tournament and was played from January 6 through January 13, 1986. First-seeded Martina Navratilova won the singles title.^[1]^[2]

Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to maneuver the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball will not gain a point, while the opposite player will.

A carpet court is a type of tennis court. The International Tennis Federation defines carpet courts as a "textile surface of woven or non-woven nylon, or a polymeric or rubber material, typically supplied in rolls or sheets" and as a removable surface. It is one of the fastest court types second only to grass courts. The use of carpet courts in Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) competitions ended in 2009 to reduce injuries. As of 2019, only one Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tournament in Quebec City is played on carpet.

The Charles E. Smith Center is a 5,000-seat multipurpose arena in the United States' capital, Washington, D.C. It is home to the George Washington University Colonials men's and women's basketball teams, as well as the university's swimming, water polo, gymnastics, and volleyball teams. Since July 2014, it has also been the home of the Washington Kastles of World TeamTennis. Smith Center has also become the temporary home of the Washington Mystics as they make a run at a WNBA Championship in 2018. Smith Center is located on the main George Washington campus in Foggy Bottom, on the block bounded by 22nd and 23rd and F and G Streets NW. The arena also has hosted concerts and includes practice courts, a swimming pool, a weight room, and athletic department offices.

Pamela Howard Shriver is a former American professional tennis player known primarily as a doubles specialist with success also as a singles player. She currently is a tennis broadcaster for ESPN. During the 1980s and 1990s, she won 133 titles, including 21 women's singles titles, 111 women's doubles titles and one mixed doubles title. In Grand Slam tournaments, Shriver won 21 doubles titles and one mixed doubles title. She also won a women's doubles gold medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with Zina Garrison as her partner.

Claudia Kohde-Kilsch is a former German tennis player and member of the Die Linke. During her tennis career, she won two women's doubles Grand Slam titles. She also won eight singles titles and a total of 25 doubles titles.
