Eurovision Song Contest 1987 song contest

The Eurovision Song Contest 1987 was the 32nd Eurovision Song Contest and was held on 9 May 1987 in Brussels, Belgium after Sandra Kim's win the previous year. The presenter was Viktor Lazlo. She agreed to present the Eurovision Song Contest, on the condition she was allowed to open with a song of her own, "Breathless". Johnny Logan was the winner for Ireland with his own composition "Hold Me Now". That made him the first performer to win the contest twice, as he had won also in 1980.

"Soldiers of Love" was the Belgian entry in the Eurovision Song Contest 1987, performed in Dutch despite the English title by Liliane Saint-Pierre.

Thanks to Johnny Logan's win in Brussels in 1987, the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest was to be held in Dublin. The song "Take Him Home", written and composed by Peter Eades and performed by Jump The Gun was chosen to represent Ireland after winning the national final selection. Held on 6 March at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin, the national final, Eurosong '88 was hosted for the second year in succession by Marty Whelan, and Maxi, who had represented Ireland as a soloist in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest, and again as part of the group Sheeba in 1981. Eight songs competed in the event, and the winner was selected by a panel of twelve "experts," each of whom awarded each song a score from one to eight points. One member of the panel was Sandy Kelly who had represented Ireland in the 1982 Eurovision Song Contest as a member of The Duskeys.

Ireland entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1980, sending Johnny Logan to the contest with the song "What's Another Year", written by Shay Healy.

To select an entry to represent Ireland in the 1987 Eurovision Song Contest in Brussels, RTÉ held a national final on 8 March, at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin. The event was hosted by RTÉ broadcaster Marty Whelan and former Irish Eurovision participant Maxi. Nine songs competed, and the winner was chosen by an "expert" jury, which included Linda Martin, who represented Ireland in 1984 and would again in 1992.

Saint-Pierre was the winner of the Belgian national final for the contest, held on 14 March.

Spain was represented by Patricia Kraus at the Eurovision Song Contest 1987, held in Brussels, Belgium. Kraus was selected internally by Radiotelevisión Española (RTVE), the Spanish broadcaster, to represent the country at the contest in Belgium with the song "No estás solo".
