The 13th round of the 1988 B.A.R.C./B.R.D.C. Lucas Formula Three British Championship , saw the series visit Oulton Park for the 23rd International Gold Cup , on 21 August. [1]

Entry

A total of 33 F3 cars were entered for this round of the British F3 Championship. Come race weekend only 27 arrived in Cheshire for qualifying. [2]

Qualifying

JJ Lehto took pole position for Pacific Racing Team in their Toyota-engined Reynard 883, averaging a speed of 109.608 mph. [3]

Race

The race was held over 20 laps of the Oulton Park circuit. Gary Brabham took the winner spoils for the Bowman Racing team, driving their Ralt-Volkswagen RT32. The Aussie won in a time of 30:29.17mins., averaging a speed of 108.967 mph. Brabham’s victory will 21 years after his father, Sir Jack Brabham, last won the Gold Cup. Second place went to JJ Lehto in Pacific Racing Team’s Reynard-Toyota 883, who was only 1.4 of a second behind. Another son of a famous racer, Damon Hill completed the podium for the Cellnet Ricoh Racing/Intersport Racing Team in his Toyota engined Ralt RT32. Completing the Brabham family domination of the race, Gary’s younger brother, David won the National Class, also in a Jack Brabham Racing prepared Ralt-Volkswagen. [4]

Oulton Park Motorsport track in United Kingdom

Oulton Park is a hard surfaced track used for motor racing, close to the village of Little Budworth, Cheshire, England. It is about 5 miles (8 km) from Winsford, 13 miles (21 km) from Chester city centre, 8 miles (13 km) from Northwich and 17 miles (27 km) from Warrington, with a nearby rail connection along the Mid-Cheshire Line. It occupies much of the area which was previously known as the Oulton Estate. The racing circuit is owned and operated by Jonathan Palmer's MotorSport Vision organisation.

Ralt

Ralt was a manufacturer of single-seater racing cars, founded by ex-Jack Brabham associate Ron Tauranac after he sold out his interest in Brabham to Bernie Ecclestone. Ron and his brother had built some specials in Australia in the 1950s under the Ralt name. Tauranac won the 1954 NSW Hillclimb Championship in the Ralt 500.

The 33rd BRDC International Trophy was a Formula Two motor race held at Silverstone on 29 March 1981. It was the opening race of the 1981 European Formula Two Championship.

1983 Gran Premio de Madrid Motor car race

The fifth Gran Premio de Madrid, was the seventh round of the 1983 European Championship for F2 Drivers. This was held at Circuito Permanente del Jarama, north of the Spanish capital, Madrid, on 12 June. This was first time the race was held since 1971.

The 1984 BRDC International Trophy was a Formula Two motor race held at Silverstone on 1 April 1984. It was the 36th running of the International Trophy, and the seventh and last under Formula Two regulations. It was also the opening race of the 1984 European Formula Two Championship.

1984 Gran Premio dellAdriatico Motor car race

The 1984 Gran Premio dell'Adriatico took place on July 22, and was the eighth round of the 1984 European Championship for F2 Drivers. It was held at the Circuito Internazionale Santamonica, near the town of Misano Adriatico in the frazione of Santamonica, Italy.

The 1988 Scottish Superprix, saw the cars from the British Formula Three series visit Knockhill, north of Dunfermline, for a non-championship race, on 7 August.

After the 18th and final round of the 1988 B.A.R.C./B.R.D.C. Lucas Formula Three British Championship, the mobile telephone company Cellnet, who were already sponsoring the Intersport Racing team, organised an invitation non championship, end of season race. This race was held at Brands Hatch, on 9 October. Although Avon Tyres still supplied the tyres, Cellnet decided to increase interest by introducing a compulsory wheel change mid-race. They requested that the changes should be visible to spectators, so Avon came up with the idea of painting the whole side of the tyres.

The 2nd round of the inaugural British Formula 3000 Championship, saw the series arrive in Hampshire, for a race at the Thruxton Circuit, on 27 March.

The 5th round of the inaugural British Formula 3000 Championship, saw the series arrive back in Kent, for their second visit of the year to Brands Hatch, on 25 June.

The 7th round of the inaugural British Formula 3000 Championship, saw the series visit Silverstone, on 30 July.

The 9th round of the inaugural British Formula 3000 Championship, saw the series return to Brands Hatch, on 10 September. Going into this, the final round, the championship was being led by Gary Brabham, separated by just one point from Andrew Gilbert-Scott

Bowman Automotive is a former racecar constructor and current racing kart producer. Bowman produced cars for Formula Ford, Formula 3, USF2000 and other racing series.
