Andrés Gómez defeated Andre Agassi in the final, 6–3, 2–6, 6–4, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1990 French Open. He became the first Ecuadorian, male or female, to win a major, and this was his only major title in singles. Agassi later alleged in his 2009 autobiography that his defeat in the final was partly due to issues with his wig.
Boris Becker defeated Ivan Lendl in the final, 7–6(7–2), 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1989 US Open. Becker saved a match point en route to the title, against Derrick Rostagno in the second round. This was Lendl's eighth consecutive singles final appearance at the US Open; he became the first man in the Open Era to finish runner-up five times at the same major.
Defending champion Ivan Lendl defeated Stefan Edberg in the final, 4–6, 7–6(7–3), 5–2 ret., to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1990 Australian Open. Edberg was forced to retire during the third set of the final due to a torn stomach muscle. This marked the first occasion since the 1911 Wimbledon Championships that a man withdrew during the championship match of a singles major.
