The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is an American college athletic conference whose member institutions are located primarily in the South Central and Southeastern United States. Its fourteen members include the flagship public universities of ten states, three additional public land-grant universities, and one private research university. The conference is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama. The SEC participates in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I in sports competitions; for football it is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A.
Patricia Susan Summitt was an American women's college basketball head coach who accrued 1,098 career wins, the most in college basketball history at the time of her retirement. She served as the head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team from 1974 to 2012.
Bruce Alan Pearl is an American college basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Auburn Tigers men's basketball team. He previously served in the same position for Tennessee, Milwaukee, and Southern Indiana. Pearl led Southern Indiana to a Division II national championship in 1995, during which he was named Division II Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
Neville Arena, formerly Auburn Arena, is a 9,121-seat multi-purpose arena in Auburn, Alabama, on the campus of Auburn University. Built in 2010 to replace Beard–Eaves–Memorial Coliseum, the $86 million facility is the home of the Auburn Tigers men's and women's basketball, women's gymnastics, and women's volleyball teams. It is located on the west side of the Auburn campus, near Wire Road between Thach Avenue and Heisman Drive. Aside from the main court, the arena also contains two practice courts, a weight room, 12 suites, coaches offices, the Auburn Ticket Office, and the Lovelace Athletic Museum. The outside of the arena features a large monument to the Auburn Creed and a statue of former Auburn men's basketball player Charles Barkley.

Its seeding is based on regular season records. The winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament; however, the official conference championship is awarded to the team or teams with the best regular season record.

Anthony Michael Barbee is an American college basketball coach, who is currently serving as head coach of the Central Michigan Chippewas. He was previously head coach at Auburn and UTEP. Barbee led UTEP to a Conference USA championship in 2010 and was named Conference USA Coach of the Year. Barbee played college basketball for Massachusetts under John Calipari, winning two Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament championships in 1992 and 1993.

Nell Fortner is the current women's college basketball coach at Georgia Tech. She is most well known for leading the 2000 Olympics team to a gold medal. She has received numerous awards including the 1997 National Coach of the Year, the 2000 USA Basketball Coach of the Year and the 2008 SEC Coach of the Year. In April 2018, she was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

DeWanna Bonner is an American-Macedonian professional basketball player for the Connecticut Sun of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Bonner played college basketball for Auburn University. After a successful college career at Auburn, she was drafted by the Phoenix Mercury with the fifth overall pick of the 2009 WNBA draft, and was traded to the Sun 11 years later.
The Alabama–Auburn men's basketball rivalry is a men's college basketball rivalry between the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Though both schools are best known for their prestigious football programs, the deeply rooted rivalry between the two extends to basketball as well.
The 1984 SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament took place from March 7–10, 1984 at the Memorial Gymnasium on Vanderbilt University’s campus located in Nashville, Tennessee. The Kentucky Wildcats won the tournament and received the SEC's automatic bid to the 1984 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball tournament by defeating the Auburn Tigers by a score of 51–49 in the championship game on March 10. Kentucky’s tournament championship win marked the first time a regular season champion won the tournament championship since the revival of the SEC Tournament in 1979.
Joseph R. Ciampi is a retired American basketball coach. Starting off in boys basketball from 1968 to 1977, Ciampi was an assistant coach for a Nanticoke high school and the head coach for Marlboro High School in New York. In women's basketball, Ciampi coached the Army Black Knights women's basketball team from 1977 to 1979 before joining the Auburn Tigers women's basketball team in 1979. With the Tigers, Ciampi and his team reached the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament final consecutively from 1988 to 1990. After winning his 600th game as a Division I coach in January 2004, Ciampi retired from basketball in March 2004.

They finished the season 28–6, 15–3 in SEC play to finish as regular season champions. As the No. 1 seed, they were defeated by No. 8 seed Texas A&M in the quarterfinals. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region, where they defeated Jacksonville State in the First Round before being upset by Miami in the Second Round.

They finished the season 20–11, 10–8 in SEC play to finish in seventh. As the No. 7 seed, they were defeated by No. 10 seed Arkansas in the second round. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 9 seed in the Midwest Region, where they defeated Iowa in the First Round before falling to Houston in the Second Round.
The 1989–90 Auburn Tigers women's basketball team represented Auburn University during the 1989–90 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Tigers, led by 11th-year head coach Joe Ciampi, played their home games at Joel H. Eaves Memorial Coliseum as members of the Southeastern Conference. They finished the season 28–7, 7–2 in SEC play to finish one game behind Tennessee in the standings. They went on to win the SEC women's tournament. Auburn finished the regular season ranked No. 9 and was selected as the No. 2 seed in the Mideast regional of the NCAA tournament. They defeated Tennessee Tech, Vanderbilt, and Washington to reach the third Final Four in program history. The Lady Tigers then defeated No. 1 seed in the Midwest region, Louisiana Tech, to reach the National championship game once again. Auburn was defeated by the West region No. 1 seed Stanford, 88–81.
