Ivanovic became the new WTA singles No. 1 by reaching the final. Maria Sharapova, Jelena Janković and Svetlana Kuznetsova were also in contention for the No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament. Ivanovic dropped only one set the entire tournament, to her compatriot Janković in the semifinals. This marked the last time Ivanovic would reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal for four and a half years until she reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 US Open, a span of 18 Grand Slam tournaments.

Alison Riske, also known by her married name Alison Riske-Amritraj, is an American professional tennis player. She reached her career-high singles ranking of world No. 18 on November 4, 2019 and won her first WTA Tour title in October 2014 at the Tianjin Open.

Serena Williams and Venus Williams were the defending champions, but Serena withdrew from the tournament and Venus didn't want to participate with another player.

Shelby Rogers American tennis player

Shelby Rogers is an American professional tennis player. She has career-high WTA rankings of 36 in singles and 40 in doubles, and has won six singles titles and one doubles title on the ITF Circuit. She won the girls' national championship at 17. Her best results as a professional came at the 2016 French Open and the 2020 US Open where she reached the quarterfinals.

Two-time defending champion Serena Williams successfully defended her title, defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final, 6–3, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2014 US Open. It was her Open Era-record-equaling sixth US Open singles title and 18th major singles title overall, equaling Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert's tally. She did not lose a set during the tournament for a record-equaling third time, and did not lose more than three games in any set.

Flavia Pennetta defeated Roberta Vinci in the final, 7–6(7–4), 6–2, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2015 US Open. It was her first major singles title, and she became the first woman to win her maiden major title after turning 30 years old. Pennetta was competing in her 49th major main draw, setting a new record for the most appearances in major main draws before reaching a final. Vinci became the first unseeded woman to reach a major final since Justine Henin at the 2010 Australian Open. Ashleigh Barty defeated Markéta Vondroušová in the final, 6–1, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2019 French Open. It was her first major singles title, making her the first Australian to win a French Open singles title since Margaret Court in 1973 and the first to win a major singles title since Samantha Stosur at the 2011 US Open. Vondroušová was the first teenager to reach the final since Ana Ivanovic in 2007, as well as the first teenager to reach a major women's singles final since Caroline Wozniacki at the 2009 US Open.
