He dominated the 1500 m event for a decade, being undefeated in the event in finals from 1996 until the 2007 World Aquatics Championships. In total, he has won 10 long-course world championship gold medals.

The 1st Short Course Swimming World Championships were organized by FINA and held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, December 2–5, 1993. The meet featured competition in a short course pool. During the championships, a total of 12 world records were broken: 10 in the women's events and 2 in men's events, both in relays.

Igor Majcen is a retired male freestyle swimmer from Slovenia. He is a three-time Olympian, making his debut in 1988 for FR Yugoslavia.

Gregorio Paltrinieri is an Italian competitive swimmer. He is the Olympic and world long course and short course champion and three-times European long course champion in the 1500 m freestyle event at the 2012, 2014 and 2016 European Aquatics Championships, and two-times European long course champion in the 800 m freestyle event. Paltrinieri is a former 1500 m freestyle world record holder. He also holds the long course European records in the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle events with times of 7:39.27 and 14:33.10.

Gergely Gyurta is a Hungarian swimmer and national team member for his home nation. He has competed at three Olympics Games and won World and European medals. His older brother is Dániel Gyurta, another Olympic swimmer who specializes in the breast stroke events.

Mackenzie James Horton is an Australian freestyle swimmer. He is an Olympic gold medallist, World Championships medallist, and Commonwealth Games medallist. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he finished first in the 400m freestyle, winning his first gold medal and became the first male swimmer from the state of Victoria to do so in the Games' history.

Guilherme Pereira da Costa is a Brazilian swimmer. In the 1500 metre freestyle, he is the gold medalist at the 2019 Pan American Games. He is also currently the South American record holder in the 400, 800, and 1500 metre freestyle.

Ahmed Ayoub Hafnaoui is a Tunisian swimmer. He is the African record holder in the short course 800-metre freestyle and 1500-metre freestyle. He competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics, where he won a gold medal in the men's 400-metre freestyle. He ranked No. 16 in the world and was the slowest qualifier for the final race but won Olympic gold with a time of 3:43.36. Hafnaoui was the only Tunisian to win Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020.
