The 1996 Workington Town season was the club's first season in the newly formed Super League. Coached by Ross O'Reilly, who replaced Kurt Sorensen in March 1996, and captained by Billy McGinty, Workington competed in Super League I and finished in 12th place, resulting in relegation to the First Division. The club also competed in the 1996 Challenge Cup, but were knocked out in the fourth round by First Division side Widnes.

Carlisle RLFC were a rugby league team based in Carlisle, Cumbria. The club was called Carlisle Border Raiders for the 1997 season, after which it merged with Barrow Braves.

The year 1996's Stones Bitter Super League I was the official name for the 102nd season of top-level rugby league football, and the first year of Europe's new championship: Super League. It is also the first season of rugby league to be played in summer. The competition featured all eleven teams from the 1995-96 RFL First Division plus one expansion club, Paris Saint-Germain.

Stones Bitter Super League II was the official name for the year 1997's Super League championship season, the 103rd season of top-level professional rugby league football in Britain, and the second to be played in summer.

The 1996 Bradford Bulls season was the 90th in the club's history. Coached by Brian Smith and captained by Robbie Paul the newly branded Bradford Bulls competed in Super League I. The Bulls finished the regular season in 3rd place and made the semi-final, losing 36-42 to Wigan Warriors. The Bulls also competed in the 1996 Challenge Cup, reaching the final which they lost 32-40 to St. Helens.

The Super League is the top-level of the British rugby league system. At present the league consists of twelve teams, of which ten are from Northern England, reflecting the sport's geographic heartland within the UK, one from London and one from southern France.

The 2013 Rugby Football League Championship, which will be known as Kingstone Press Championship due to sponsorship by Kingstone Press Cider, is a semi-professional rugby league football competition played in the UK, one tier below the first tier Super League. The club also competed in the 1996 Challenge Cup, but were knocked out in the fifth round by First Division side Salford Reds, and was the first time the club had failed to win the trophy since 1987.

The 1996 Leeds RLFC season was the club's the first season in the newly formed Super League. Coached by Dean Bell, the club competed in Super League I and finished in 10th place. The club also competed in the 1996 Challenge Cup, and were knocked out in the semi-finals by Bradford Bulls. At the end of the season, the club changed its name to Leeds Rhinos.

The 1996 London Broncos season was the seventeenth in the club's history and their first season in the Super League. Coached by Tony Currie, the Broncos competed in Super League I and finished in 4th place. The club also reached the fourth round of the Challenge Cup.

The 1996 Halifax Blue Sox season was the club's first season in the Super League. Coached by Steve Simms, the Halifax Blue Sox competed in Super League I and finished in 6th place. The club also reached the quarter-final of the Challenge Cup.

The 1996 Oldham Bears season was the club's first season in the Super League. Coached by Andy Goodway, the Oldham Bears competed in Super League I and finished in 8th place. The club also reached the fourth round of the Challenge Cup.

The 1996 Sheffield Eagles season was the 13th season in the club's rugby league history and the first season in the Super League. Coached by Gary Hetherington, the Eagles competed in Super League I and finished in 7th place. The club also reached the fifth round of the Challenge Cup.

The 1996 St Helens RLFC season was the 101st season in the club's rugby league history and the first season in the Super League. Coached by Shaun McRae, the Saints competed in Super League I and finished in 1st place, and also went on to win the 1996 Challenge Cup, beating Bradford Bulls in the final.

The 1996 Warrington Wolves season was the 102nd season in the club's rugby league history and the first season in the Super League. Coached by John Dorahy, the Warrington Wolves competed in Super League I and finished in 5th place. The club also reached the fifth round of the Challenge Cup.
