The Major League Soccer All-Star Game is an annual soccer game held by Major League Soccer featuring selected players from the league against an international club or selected players from another league. MLS initially adopted a traditional all-star game format used by other North American sports leagues where the Eastern Conference squared off against the Western Conference. This eventually evolved into the current system where the league annually invites a club from abroad to play against a league all-star team in a friendly match; in 2021 and 2022, an all-star team from Liga MX was the opponent. The MLS All-Stars hold a 9–8 record in the competition, which generally marks the season's midpoint. Players are awarded roster spots through a combination of fan voting and selections by the appointed manager and league commissioner.

Major League Soccer, looking to capitalize on the success of the United States at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, invited the U.S. national team to compete against the MLS All-Stars. Bruce Arena assembled a roster of the national team's most prominent domestic players in the last decade, while then-San Jose Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop formed an All-Star team of the top talent among the league's remaining players.

The 2009 Major League Soccer All-Star Game was the 14th annual MLS All-Star Game. The MLS All-Stars faced Everton of the Premier League on July 29, 2009. The match ended in a 1–1 draw at full-time and went to an immediate penalty shootout, which Everton won 4–3. Everton's Tim Howard--the United States first-choice goalkeeper and a former MetroStars player--was named MVP of the match, after making three saves during the shootout. This was the first win for an international club team in six tries against the MLS All-Stars.

The match was broadcast in the US on ESPN2 in English and Galavision in Spanish.
The 1996 Major League Soccer All-Star Game was the first Major League Soccer All-Star Game, a soccer match involving all-stars from Major League Soccer. Teams of the best players from each conference played against each other at Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, on July 14, 1996. The MLS All-Stars East won the game 3–2, with goals from Tab Ramos, Giovanni Savarese and Steve Pittman while Preki and Jason Kreis scored for the MLS All-Stars West. MLS All-Stars East midfielder Carlos Valderrama was named as the game's Most Valuable Player. Kevin Stott refereed the game, which was attended by 78,416 spectators.

The game was televised live on ESPN and Univision in the United States, and on TSN and RDS in Canada. The game featured the MLS All-Star team playing English side Arsenal, with the match being a preseason friendly for Arsenal as part of their tour of California.

It was held on August 1 at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia and played against Italian club Juventus. The match was tied 1–1 after 90 minutes and was settled in a penalty shoot-out that Juventus won 5–3.

The game, featuring the MLS All-Stars taking on the Liga MX All-Stars, was played at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
