Aránzazu Isabel María "Arantxa" Sánchez Vicario is a Spanish former world No. 1 retired tennis player. She won 14 Grand Slam titles: four in singles, six in women's doubles, and four in mixed doubles. She also won four Olympic medals and five Fed Cup titles representing Spain. In 1994, she was crowned the ITF World Champion for the year.

The Women's Doubles competition was part of the tennis program at the 1996 Summer Olympics. Gigi Fernández and Mary Joe Fernandez were the defending gold medallists, and successfully defended their title, defeating Jana Novotná and Helena Suková in the final 7–6(8–6), 6–4. To obtain the bronze medal, Conchita Martínez and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated Manon Bollegraf and Brenda Schultz-McCarthy 6–1, 6–3.

The women's doubles competition was part of the tennis program at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Zina Garrison and Pam Shriver were the defending gold medallists, but neither competed in this tournament.

Martina Hingis and Jana Novotná were the defending champions but decided not to compete together. Hingis partnered with Anna Kournikova but withdrew before the start of the tournament. Novotná competed with Natasha Zvereva but lost in the semifinals to Mariaan de Swardt and Elena Tatarkova.

Hingis and Kournikova, however, ended up winning the title, defeating first seeds Lindsay Davenport and Natasha Zvereva, 7–5, 6–3. With this win, Hingis won her fifth consecutive Grand Slam title in doubles, and became the only woman to have won three consecutive Australian Open titles in singles and doubles simultaneously. Hingis and her partners defeated Davenport/Zvereva for all five consecutive women's doubles titles starting with the 1998 Australian and ending with the 1999 Australian Open.

Second-seeded Arantxa Sánchez Vicario won the singles title and $80,000 first-prize money.
