In December 2004, with 2 months left on his contract, Sorin Cârţu and president Nicu Boghici agreed for a departure. January 2005 came with rumors which said that Mittal Steel would take over the team, for which they already were shirt sponsors. Soon after, Viorel Anghelinei, former player of Oțelul and referee, was appointed as the new president of the club. The new manager of Oțelul, Mihai Stoichiţă was announced on the 23rd of January.
Although at the end of the previous season they relegated, Oțelul managed to retain their spot in Divizia A after the merger of FC Astra Ploieşti and newly promoted Petrolul Ploieşti. After 15 rounds played in Divizia A, Costel Orac was fired in December and replaced with Sorin Cârţu.
In the summer of 2002, coach Marius Lăcătuş refused to extend his contract saying that he is unhappy with the current financial situation at Oțelul and left the team. Soon after, many players whose contracts were expiring also left the team. They were joined by vice-president Mihai Stoica, who signed for Steaua. President Ion Ionică appointed Costel Orac as the new manager. Later in that summer, Igor Pîrvu is named as the new president of the club.
Victor Roşca who was appointed on July 4, 2001 left the team in February 2002. Few days later, Lăcătuş was appointed as the new manager.
Oțelul have appointed Aurel Ţicleanu as their new manager, after the contract of Dumitru Dumitriu has expired. A few months later, in November, he resigned from the team. The team was left in charge of assistant-manager Ion Gigi until the winter-break. The new manager of the team, Ilie Dumitrescu, was announced on December 6, 2000. His contract ended after the last match of the season, in June 2001.
Oțelul have appointed Dumitru Dumitriu as their new manager after Vasile Simionaş left the team in early June.
FC Braşov started the 2009–2010 season of Liga I with the goal of qualifying for the Europa League.
The 2010–11 Cupa României was the seventy-third season of the annual Romanian football knockout tournament. It began on 17 July 2010 with the matches of the first round. For the third consecutive season, CFR Cluj were the defending champions. However, CFR were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Gloria Bistriţa, and the cup was won by Steaua Bucureşti for the first time after 12 years.

The 2014–15 Cupa României was the seventy-seventh season of the annual Romanian primary football knockout tournament. Astra Giurgiu, last season's title holders, were eliminated in the Round of 32 by the Liga II team Mioveni. Steaua București won the tournament.
The 2017–18 season is Petrolul Ploiești's 88th season in the Romanian football league system. Petrolul came first in the 2016–17 Liga IV.
During early 2017, it was reported that the Romanian subsidiary of French company Veolia would take over the club. On 16 June 2017, with financial support from the company, ACS Petrolul 52 Ploiești leased FC Petrolul brand from the Municipality of Ploiești for €30,000 and returned to the former name of FC Petrolul Ploiești, targeting a return to the first division in the 2019–20 season.
The 2003–04 season was Bihor Oradea's 45th season in the Romanian football league system, and their 18th season in the Divizia A. At the end of the season the team finished on 16th place and relegated back to Divizia B, after only one season in the top flight of the Romanian football. During this season the club was known as FC Oradea.
