The 1st Armoured-Mechanized Battalion "Sokolovi" (Lit: Falcons) (Croatian: 1. oklopno-mehanizirana bojna "Sokolovi") is one of two mechanized infantry battalions within the Guards Armoured Mechanized Brigade (GOMBR) of the Croatian Army.

History

Established in its current form after the reorganisation of the Armed Forces of Croatia in 2007, the 1st Mechanized Battalion was created with the merging of the 3rd Guards Brigade "Kune" and 5th Guards Brigade "Sokolovi".

Organisation

Garrisoned at 132nd Brigade barracks in Našice, the battalion is composed of three mechanized infantry companies, a command company, a logistics company and a fire support company. [1]

Operations

In the past, members of the 1st Armoured-mechanized Battalion have been deployed in support of the NATO ISAF mission in Afghanistan as part of the Croatian Contingent (HRVCON), and to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) mission in the Golan Heights. [2]

The 1st Mechanized Battalion is equipped with armoured vehicles and various infantry weapons of Yugoslav origin. [3] [4]

The Battle of the Barracks was a series of engagements that occurred in mid-to-late 1991 between the Croatian National Guard and the Croatian police on one side and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) on the other. The battle took place around numerous JNA posts in Croatia, starting when Croatian forces blockaded the JNA barracks, weapons storage depots and other facilities. It formally began on 14 September; its objective was to neutralise the JNA positions in ZNG-held territory and to secure arms and ammunition supplies for the poorly equipped ZNG.

The Croatian National Guard was an armed force established by Croatia in April and May 1991 during the Croatian War of Independence. Although it was established within the framework of the Ministry of the Interior for legal reasons, the ZNG was under the direct command of the Ministry of Defence. It was tasked with the protection of Croatia's borders and territory, and with tasks normally associated with police forces. The ZNG was formed with the transfer of special police units to the ZNG, establishing four all-professional brigades in May 1991, and was presented to the public in a military parade in Zagreb on 28 May. It was commanded by Defence Minister General Martin Špegelj before his resignation in early August. Špegelj was replaced by General Anton Tus, who became the first head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia.

Although the JNA's initial orders were to lift the Croatian siege of the JNA's barracks in the city and isolate the region of Dalmatia from the rest of Croatia, the orders were amended during the battle to include capturing the Port of Zadar in the city centre. The JNA's advance was supported by the Yugoslav Air Force and Navy.

The Special Operations Battalion, or popularly BSD was founded on 8 September 2000 when the Special Combat Skills Center from Šepurine and the 1st Croatian Guards Brigade were amalgamated. It ceased to exist in 2014, when it was transformed into the Special Operations Command.

The Zrinski Battalion was a special forces unit of the Croatian National Guard and later of the Croatian Army established in Kumrovec on 18 May 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence. The unit drew personnel from the special police forces and a former French Foreign Legion troops serving as its core. The battalion was set up and initially commanded by Ante Roso, while Major Miljenko Filipović took over as the commanding officer in August.

The 1st Croatian Guards Corps was a special formation of the Croatian Army directly subordinated to the Ministry of Defence rather than the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia and reporting directly to the President of Croatia. The corps was established in 1994 by the amalgamation of various HV special forces. Military Intelligence Battalion (MIB) was an intelligence unit of the Croatian Army which served as support to all other units of the Armed Forces of Croatia. It was established in 2000 during restructuring of Armed Forces when 350th Sabotage Detachment of General Staff, 1st Reconnaissance and Sabotage company of GS "Anguilla", 74th Engineer Company of GS, 280th UAV Platoon of GS as well as 1st Croatian Guards, and acted as 350th Military Intelligence Battalion until 2007.
