The 2001–02 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the 8th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (English: German Ice Hockey League). The league also introduced a new logo, that will stay in use until the 2011-2012 season.

Deutsche Eishockey Liga recurring tournament

The Deutsche Eishockey Liga or DEL, is a German professional ice hockey league that was founded in 1994. It was formed as a replacement for the Eishockey-Bundesliga and became the new top-tier league in Germany as a result. Unlike the old Bundesliga, the DEL is not under the administration of the German Ice Hockey Federation.

The Kölner Haie won the DEL Championship the second time in their history, making it the eighth time they held the German Champion title.

Kölner Haie ice hockey team

The Kölner Haie are an ice hockey club based in Cologne, Germany that plays in the professional Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). The team was one of the founding members of the DEL.

Relegation was reintroduced for this season and after a playdown the Berlin Capitals were relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. This would not be the only teams leaving the league, as the DEL withdrew the license for the Moskitos Essen and Revierlöwen Oberhausen. The Revierlöwen Oberhausen were not able to provide an DEL-sized arena and the Moskitos Essen were insolvent.

2nd Bundesliga (ice hockey) second tier of Ice hockey in Germany

The 2nd Eishockey-Bundesliga was the second tier of Ice hockey in Germany until 2012/13 and has since been replaced by DEL2. Starting in 2002, the league was organized by the ESBG, to which the league organization was outsourced from the DEB, the German ice hockey federation. In the 2012–13 season, it featured 13 teams.

Reiverlöwen Oberhausen was an ice hockey team in Oberhausen, Germany. They played in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga from 1997-2002.

Playdown

The two lastplaced Berlin Capitals and Schwenninger Wild Wings played a playdown best-of-seven series to determine who will be relegated.

The Berlin Capitals were to be relegated. Irrespective of their misfortunes on the ice, they would not have been able to join the DEL for the next season, as the league withdrew their license for non-compliance with the regulations.

Quarterfinals

Quarterfinals started on March 22, 2002 with the bestplaced München Barons playing the 8th placed Augsburger Panther; secondplaced Adler Mannheim playing 7th placed Eisbären Berlin; thirdplaced Krefeld Pinguine playing 6th placed Kölner Haie. A curiosity were the 4th placed Nürnberg Ice Tigers playing the 5th placed Kassel Huskies, as this was the same as in the previous season.

The finals started April 12 with Adler Mannheim playing the first game home due to better regular season placement.

While the DEL is an independently operated league, the other two are run by the German ice hockey federation, the DEB, through the ESBG. 2009–10 DEL season

The 2009–10 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season is the 16th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Prior to the season, the Füchse Duisburg voluntarily left the league due to financial hardship. Bietigheim Steelers, champions of the 2. Bundesliga had an opportunity to join the league, but canceled their licensing application.

2007–08 DEL season

The 2007–08 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the 14th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Fifteen teams played after the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg received the license and were admitted to play in the DEL. Each club played the other four times, resulting in 56 regular-season games per club. The top six clubs at the end of the regular season qualified for the first round of the play-offs. The clubs seven to ten played a preliminary round to determine the last two places for the first round. For the teams placed eleven to fifteen, the season ended. No club was relegated from the DEL in this season.

2006–07 DEL season

The 2006–07 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the 13th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. The league was played with 14 clubs in the 2006–07 season, the same number as the previous season. However, in place of the Kassel Huskies, who were relegated the previous season, the Straubing Tigers took part in the competition, having won the 2nd Bundesliga in 2005–06. The format had slightly changed from the previous season. Each club played the other four times, resulting in 52 regular-season games per club. The top six clubs at the end of the regular season qualified for the first round of the play-offs. The clubs seven to ten played a preliminary round to determine the last two places for the first round. For the teams placed eleven to fourteen, the season ended.

2003–04 DEL season

The 2003–04 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the 10th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. The Frankfurt Lions became German Champions, and the Wölfe Freiburg were relegated back to the 2. Bundesliga after a single season.

The 1994–95 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the inaugural season of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. The Kölner Haie they won the first DEL season to become German Champions.

With DEL being the top-level league, it would be known as the DEL - Die 1. Bundesliga, and the 1. Liga as the 2. Bundesliga. A new logo displaying the full name was introduced at the same time.

The 2000–01 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the 7th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. The Adler Mannheim won the DEL Championship the fourth time in 5 seasons, extending their dominance in German ice hockey. It was also the fifth time in their history they held the German Champion title.

2010–11 DEL season

The 2010–11 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season is the 17th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. As reigning champions of the 2. Bundesliga, EHC München were promoted to the DEL.

The 2011–12 Deutsche Eishockey Liga season was the 18th season since the founding of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga. Eisbären Berlin won the league championship after posting the top record during the regular season.
