The Jaunpur train crash was a rail accident that occurred on 13 May 2002 in Uttar Pradesh, India. Subsequent investigation indicated that the cause was removal of plates that bind stretches of rail.
The Shramjeevi Express was travelling from New Delhi to Patna when it hit a broken rail near Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh shortly before 4:00 am on 12 May 2002. [1] [2] Carriages were thrown into the air and dragged off the rails, some into each other. Local people and emergency services rescued travellers from the wreckage. 80 passengers were injured and received medical care at local hospitals. Twelve passengers in a carriage that rolled over were killed.[ citation needed ]
Police established that fishplates were missing from the rails, thus causing the rails to shift out of alignment as successive trains passed over them. [3] The plates were found in the vicinity, suggesting deliberate removal. [4]
There have been four railway accidents at Potters Bar in England. Those in 1898 and 1946 were signals passed at danger. The accident in 2002 led to substantial public debate and a national change in policy relating to maintenance of infrastructure.

The Mihrawan derailment occurred on 31 May 2012, when seven coaches of the Dehradun bound Doon Express derailed near Mihrawan in the Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. The accident took place at 1.13 PM killing four and injuring fifty more instantly. Reacting to the incident, Railway Ministry spokesman Anil Saxena told the press that "While four of the coaches got tilted, three of them derailed. So the coaches which are affected are the 11th onwards from the engine, up to the 17th coach". The region, where accident took place, does not have good road connectivity. Relief and rescue teams had to rush to the spot from Varanasi and Lucknow. On the possible cause for the accident, Railway Board member AP Mishra said that exact cause has to be ascertained. It could have been "due to excessive heat causing track expansion or some miscreant activity", he said, adding that the railway track could be cleared by the next morning. The train was heading towards Varanasi at the time of its derailment.
The 2015 Uttar Pradesh train accident occurred on 20 March 2015. The Dehradun Varanasi Janata Express derailed near Bachhrawan in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, northern India, resulting in at least 58 deaths and 150 people being injured. The accident was attributed to brake failure.
On 20 November 2016, the Indore–Patna Express 19321, a scheduled train from Indore to Patna, derailed near Pukhrayan, Kanpur, India, resulting in the death of 150 passengers and injuries to at least another 150.

On 19 August 2017, the Kalinga Utkal Express train derailed near Khatauli in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, India causing fatalities: 23 people were killed and 156 others were injured. This was the fourth major passenger train derailment in 2017 and the third in Uttar Pradesh.
